Okay, after 31 pages, I give up.

What is Minecraft? I've registered an account though not purchased it, have watched this thread, watched youTube clips, read blogs about it, but I'm not sure I understand anything at all about it!

Let me write what I think it is and you guys tell me how close or far off I am with maybe a better description.

Okay here it goes:

You are a miner, and you have tools to work with, and you build a mine or something similar to uncover precious metals to build things. Then there are creepers who like to disrupt your mining and building of things and destroy or try to anyways.

You got the general idea right.

Basicly it's a pure sandbox game, there's no story, no objectives, no other NPCs (except the monsters and cows, pigs etc.), just what you decide to make of it. Like a virtual Lego set, except better.

It's like asking "what is Super Mario?".

Minecraft isn't one of those big-budget titles that focus on graphics and story-telling. It's more of a throwback to old-school gaming. The only way to answer "what is Minecraft? " is with "Fun."

Game generates random world, though not "random" random; it makes sense and can be quite beautifull. The world consists of blocks, which you can mine. You can use those to make things; wood makes sticks, sticks and coal make torches, etc. Then throw in a handfull of (nasty) enemies to add a survival component and you've got Minecraft.

Mind you, it's an alpha: plenty of stuff will be added, including a narative to tie it all together and drive a player forward.

I tried loading this in single player. First, I was crushed when the game loaded. When I managed to jump out of that, I realize that I've spawned as Fincuan (eeewww!).

Is there anyway to choose which player you spawn as? I think I had 15 stacks of stone, a lot of iron, and some gold on my person when this save was made, and it'd be a shame to lose it all.

Barring that, can you post a later save?

I tried deleting everyone else in the player folder, as well as sessionlock and level.dat_old, but still no dice.

EDIT: Anyone else getting rather bad performance? Slight stuttering all the time like the game would be rendering new areas even if you stand still?
