U-33's first patrol
U-33 fighting the weather near the North Channel whilst following a convoy with the Nelson at its heart. The weather never improved and I had to let it and the others go. Sept 15th 1939.
Dashing through the waves to get ahead of a large tanker in BF15, Sept 20th 1939. Waiting impatiently for a passenger/cargo to sink in AM57, Sept 21st 1939. Our last internal torpedo had to be used to finish it off. On the way home, picked up a hydrophone contact at short range north of Scotland, Sept 24th. I knew it was small and insignificant, so I couldn't resist having a look at it struggling through the rough weather. |
