New method in UK to control prison numbers!

I wasn't sure if this was serious or not.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6057528.stm

Quote:
Blunkett 'gave machine-gun order'

David Blunkett told the head of the Prison Service to call in the Army and "machine-gun" rioting inmates to regain control of a jail in 2002, reports say.

Martin Narey, then director general, said the then home secretary told him he did not care about possible deaths during bids to retake Lincoln prison.

.....

He said that, during a telephone conversation in October 2002, he told Mr Blunkett he would not rush into ordering staff back into jail if it put lives at risk.

He told The Times: "[Mr Blunkett] shrieked at me that he didn't care about lives, told me to call in the Army and 'machine-gun' the prisoners and - still shrieking - again ordered me to take the prison back immediately.
This is just plain funny.

I've got no problem with the application of deadly force to control prison riots if the lives of the guards or other prison staff are in jeopardy. ******* 'em.

Now, here's a thought...if you're a prisoner, and you don't want to get mowed down by a machine gun....DON'T FRIGGIN' RIOT.

Would possibly have saved the British tax payers a lot of money.

Well we do have a prison overcrowding problem to which John Reid is looking for alternative solutions. But I doubt even the hard man of the Labour party will consider this extreme option.

What is there to RIOT about? They get caught doing something they shouldn't be, get a roof over their heads, 3 square meals a day & (correct me if I'm wrong) actually get paid (read wage) for any work they do while inside?

There are a lot of law abiding people in the UK who don't even come close to this level of care.

They waved their rights as soon as they commited a crime.

That said, Live ammo might be a bit severe, maybe rubber rounds?

Hehe the Labour governement 'comedy of errors'
Quote:

perhaps he (blunkett) couldn't see the wood for the trees ...boom-tish!

Lol, Bremner Bird & Fortune were alwyas taking the piss out of Blunkett by depicting him as some kind of action hardnut type. Most amusing.

Simple fact is imo that the prison guards and administration have failed in their duty of care by allowing the riot to happen in the first place. But then again like most everything in this country, the prison service is underfunded and has a short-fall of experienced staff, so why are people supprised when things like this go belly up?

Maybe Gordon Brown could tax my mothers state pension some more to make up the loss in this and countless other areas

It a win win situation. Saves money and reduces overcrowding. At least the prisoners wouldn't re-offend!!

It would be an incentive to others there to stay on the straight and narrow and never go to jail. I'm sure you would get the backing of many of the police force, as they wouldn't have to deal with them again.

Is there some reason you brought back a thread that died seven years ago, just to make a lame comment?

Seems like a timely rebirth to me. Brits should pack all their wrongdoers into Falklands. If Argies want if they have to take the lot.

I thought they already did that, it's called Australia. Just keep an eye on Tarjak....He's from the colony.

Holy seven year necromancy, Batman!

I must admit I did a double take when I got to The Avon Ladys post. Then I checked the date.
