I spoke too soon.Installed GWX,ran it,start was in Keil,i was to patrol AN block,my start position you would assume would be Kiel. But NO,it was about 100 Nm from the coast of ghana. So i exit and decide to start later on in the War starting from Lorient, get the loading screen then all of a sudden a black screen! Not a full screen but one like i am getting in SH5 !I have yet to see if the vanilla version will work.

That may be a problem caused by a corrupt file - I found that my starting position was somewhere off the coast of Ghana when I tried to start from Königsberg - that was because that particular port had been omitted from my version of the file: Data/Menu/en_menu.txt

Since then it refuses to start.Would a reinstall of GWX be an idea?At present i am just finding mods to make the vanilla game better.

Yes, make sure you un-install cleanly through Programs and Features. This should get rid of any registry settings that might cause problems. Then, if anything of SH3 remains delete any folders belonging to SH3; which are the install folder and the one in (My) Documents. I suspect your previous patching attempts were done in the wrong order or something.

You mention you got it patched up to version 1.5. That does not make sense, as SH3 never got higher than 1.4b. You must be mistaken with SH4 I think.

You also tried to apply patch EMEA 1.0 to 1.3. But wasn't possible because a file was wrong. First of all, there should be an all-inclusive patch all the way to 1.4b for EMEA here (as you are from the UK):

http://www.silenthunteriii.com/uk/updates.php

First install Silent Hunter 3 cleanly, I suggest a folder named c:\games\SilentHunter3.

Don't run the game yet, but apply the patch to 1.4b first.

Now do a test run of the game.

If the above went well, consider applying mods, like GWX.

When i installed the game,it tells me that its v1.5.It MUST be already patched as it ran right off the bat with no need for updates. Can GWX be installed using JGSME?

No you must download the GWX files and then run the application from the file folder you just downloaded...it does everything itself and adds in JSGME for you

Just make sure its a clean installation and put it into a folder on its own. DO NOT allow it to instal in the designated C drive folder.
I put mine into its own folder in the D drive.

Runs perfectly. Here's how for W8

Clean install (own folder outside automatic folder designation by your PC)
Do not run the game
Run 1.4 patch
Do not run game
Set up JSGME
Do not run game
Set up SH Commander
Go for it Captain

Thats for DVD in the reader, for running without the DVD in the drive you will need to add the SH3 cracks in at the stage before 1.4 patch upgrade.

Sink em all.......
Hello John, sorry for jumping in. I have been following your suggestions to get SH3 loaded on my late 2013 macbook pro. I am currently running Windows 8 pro in it's own partion. My first attempt with the SH3 CD failed with the default directory for installation. I have created ANOTHER drive within the Windows 8 side of my computer, to not install in the default directory as you suggested. The installation will not allow the separate folder. I get an error: Specified folder is invalid, incomplete, or write protected. Please select a valid install path. I have played with the settings of this folder, to try and allow it to write to it, to no avail. Any suggestions from the community would be appreciated. Thanks to all for keeping this great game still active!

Sorry but I have no knowledge of the Mac OS and how it configures the separate windows partition to be able to advise you.
Maybe someone else might be able to suggest what steps to take

Apologies

I have no experience with Mac OS either. But what folder path did you try do put it in then? Maybe you tried another place that happens to be restricted by Microsoft.

Usually I just replace the \Program Files\Ubisoft\ part with \Games\ in the path specification text box. As I don't mind it is in the C-drive. Or potentially you need to create the folder manually on the drive, instead of letting the installation software do it.

Ok, but windows folder paths use \ as seperator-markers. In contrast to Unix/Linux, of which Mac OS is a derivative I understand. So that could be the reason it was not accepted when you entered it.
