IMO, he made the role of his life in 'The Night of the Generals'. His impersonation of the sadistic general is outstanding. Also had a heart touching performance in 'Goodbye Mr. Chips' (the 1969 version).

One of my favorite actors, capable to play any kind of role with brilliance. He will be missed by many.

Played a great part as Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia
A fellow Leeds lad as well (All though some say he was born in Ireland)

IIRC even he wasn't sure where he was born - I think in his autobiography he says he had two birth certificates, one stating he was born in Ireland and one saying it was England.
