Oh I wouldn't find the time to make use of it. I've got enough stuff as it is.

Thanks for the offer though....maybe someday.

Hmm ok, well as a gamer who has done exactly that and does not try to stay cutting edge, you can do it and it doesn't have to cost a fortune, it just means you don't run your games maxed out after a while.

Anyhow I spotted several issues with your math. First off your are not including all the other expenses associated with a console, such as a TV. With the new consoles if you want to see the higher end graphics, you are probably going to need a new tv, or have bought a new tv recently if you want the graphics. Then there are the monthly costs to hook up your console to the net (both companies are now charging for services), and these add up fast over several years. Then there is the price difference in games between consoles and pc, which also adds up. You also don't have access to services like steam which can save a large fortune in games if you wait a bit before purchasing. There are also addons and accessories for consoles too (bigger hard drive for the ps4 for example) plus extra controllers, etc.. Also you do need to account for the fact that a PC is so much more than just a game machine/video player, and can do many many things that a console cannot. That factors into the cost as well.

Lastly with the indi game scene just exploding, you really don't need a top line computer, and graphical power curve is starting to slow as it is getting just too expensive to make ever increasingly graphically detailed games. Towards the end of the 7 years you may not have a computer that can run the latest games all maxed out, but then again the consoles never came near to the graphics capabilities of a PC even in year one.

IF you know how, you can also pretty much do the home console thing with a pc, even without steam, complete with xbox 360 controllers. The only real issue is how some of the publishers tend to treat PC in certain genres such as sports games *cough cough* EASports *cough*. There are certain console games I would love to have (Red Dead Redemption and Gran Turismo off the top of my head), but I have no desire to buy one, as it is not worth the cost, especially not in addition to a PC.

Oh and lastly, the person that waited a couple of years to get an xbox 360 or ps3 is probably going to wait as long on the newest console as well, so they are probably going to get 7 years out of the system too.
