I'd love to get a Defender 110, but it sucks to have to shell out maybe 60-80 grand to buy a 16 year old car (restored, I have no desire to do anything on it myself, and I want a 100% reliable vehicle). I had a 1963 109 once, but here in NM no AC (and slow, even with overdrive for any highway travel) is a show-stopper for me.

I am one of these dubious but lucky guys who simply do not like to drive cars. I have a license, but I never needed it, since I never owned a car. Never needed one,l never wanted one, never had one. saves plenty of money!

What matters to me and what matches my living conditions best, is a good, reliable bicycle. Must not be anything specialm but reliable it must be - I travel up to 90 km away from home via bike. not good to get hit by a malfucntion or a flat tire - while being that far "out there".

For long range travelling, I also never used airliners. I did my voyages all by train or ferries, and on location via donkeys and mules, busses, rarely a jeep, or on foot. That are the only ways to travel if you really want to experience the travel itself. airliners are just timemachines, you could as well use a beaming transporter from Star Trek.

Once we were arrested in a kurdish village and carried out by Turkish troops on a truck - then I almost got killed by an idiot trying to impress the female assistant aid of my boss back then, by making tricks and behaving like an a##e in love - and loosing a shot from his rifle that almost cut my spine - 2cm were missing. worst example of a totally mislocated (non-commissioned) military officer I ever have met.

Needless to say, since then I not only hate travelling by airliners or cars, but travelling by trucks, too - especially with a flirting Turkish NCO onboard.

Cars - pfffft!

I like the literature by Ray Bradbury. Bradbury hates cars, too, he said, he never drove himself, i think, and also he hates flying in big planes. with company like this, i could live well!

Provided they live close enough

I hate driving, too. It's boring, tedious, and often makes me sleepy if I'm at it for very long. In one of life's cruel ironies, I'm also an excellent driver. (Thanks, God) Stick, auto, trailered, towing, forwards, backwards, on-road, off-road, double clutching, wheeled, tracked, waterborne, whatever, I can drive it, and I can drive it well.

My preferred method of transporation for long distance is also a bike, albeit one with an internal combustion engine. I love riding motorcycles. Especially really, really, fast ones. I go places I don't even need to go just so I can ride my motorcycle; or at least I did, before some a-wipe stole it from me. When I get my new CBR-1000 I am keeping it in the garage.
I'm not even going to go into all the reasons motorcycles are wonderful because this post would be intolerably long.

Other than that, I prefer to travel by horse. Nothing beats the feeling of being totally in-tune with such a powerful animal. A well-trained horse will often literally know what you want before you do. It's almost impossible to describe, which is just as well for you guys because my essay on horses would be ten times as long as my essay on motorcycles.

For the moment, I drive around in a tan '04 Kia Spectra. I don't like it, it doesn't like me, and I can't wait for the day when I can get rid of it, but the dang thing runs like a dream. For $2000, it was a pretty good investment.

edit- Whoops! Almost forgot, riding a horse also gets you points with frau kaleun. Beat that, Sky :P

The best car in the world is one that is paid off and still runs good.

That ford ranger i mentioned on page 1?

I bought it used with only 53,500 miles on it, for 5800 in cold hard cash.

Just turned 70,000 miles on it this week.

That's a fair cop. Guilty as charged.

Irregardless of my poor grammar, you will have to forgive me. English is not my native language. I am an American.
