When my older daughter turned 21, I told my dear old dad that for the first time I was feeling old.

His reply: "Can I let you in on a little secret? People in their seventies really don't appreciate listening to children in their fifties whine about feeling old!"

I remember that every time I hear some girl (and it's always a girl) whine about turning 25: "I'm a quarter of a century old!"

"Yeah? Think how your mom feels about that!"

A new copy of The World's Merchant Fleets, 1939: The Particulars And Wartime Fates of 6,000 Ships, by Roger Jordan. I already have one, but I got it real cheap and the bottom of the spine was trashed. It was still fully useable, but when I found a brand-new copy for $15 I just had to have it.

The other is Merchant Ships of the World in Color, 1910-1929, by Lawrence Dunn. $17 and free shipping. So I got them both for under forty bucks.

Sweet Good prices too, that makes it all the better

I like the idea of the second book, colour photographs from the 1910s-1920s are always a treat to browse over. I recall seeing colour footage of the Thames in the 1930s and it's absolutely fascinating.

Here's the link:

Happy Birthday Steve.

Your pieces are probably one of the most level-headed and decent ones I've ever read on "the internets" and I enjoy reading them. You are a fair, reasonable and intellectually honest debater, while many people only try to achieve that impression by qualifying their remarks with "I know this and that, BUT", when in reality they know nothing.

All the best, Sir, and bless you.

I guess if you knew you were going to live so long, you would have taken much better care of yourself.

Let's all hope that 61 is a better year for you.

Me, I started out with a nice hot shower and breakfast at Carl's Jr. Before you laugh, I'll tell you that their Loaded Breakfast Burrito is the best breakfast in town for under ten bucks, and the combo is actually half that. I always eat there - it starts my day off right.

I just came from having that steak dinner, and I am stuffed, tired and happy. It was perfect, or at least as perfect as Sizzler can get, which ain't bad.

I joke about it, but I'm doing okay. I always like to remember a quote from JAG:

Ernest Borgnine: "Commander, do you have any idea what it's like to be seventy-two?"

David James Elliot: "No, Chief, I don't."

EB: "Sure you do. Yeah, you're slower and some things don't work as well as they used to, but up here [taps his head] where it counts, you're still the same crazy kid you were at eighteen!"

Pfft...when I hear some Pretty Young Thing talk about 30 being "old" I just want to say something I can't repeat, here.
