Although the official guide looks 10 pages long.

Nice, but exclusive game content (ship skins) for collector editions is just bad form.

That's scary. I remember when stuff like that, and more, would have been part of the manual. I dug up the .pdf manual for the original Silent Hunter recently. It describes the game and controls, a brief history of the sub campaign in the war, and then has an eleven page appendix with the recollections of a WWII skipper. Following that is a section on tactics, by the same commander. The final section is a write up, again by the commander, on the fire control problem and the equations needed to hit a target with a torpedo.

Basically, the manual has stuff that you would need to go hunt down on the internet these days.

Exclusive content in the game I find to be unfortunate. I'm also wondering if this iron box they mention is going to be shaped like a coffin.

Official guide and map???

Woooow, official guide. Looks like you have to pay extra to get a manual.
We got a map and a manual in the normal edition of SH3. What will the normal edition of SH5 have?

The music is easily ripped from the music folder. And 7 skins.... 7? There will be more than 7 skins out in the first week of modding.

What a pile of ****.

I wonder what fascinating insights the official guide will contain?

"Shoot the Battleship until its hitpoints reach 0. Then it'll sink!!"

"Dive to avoid aircraft!!"

Hear, hear! Nothing beats those old DOS game manuals. Even Silent Service for the Atari 800XL had a nice section on sub tactics if I remember correctly. Why those 200 page manuals turned into 50 I have no idea. Probably a money thing (as usual).
Nice idea about the coffin but a little morbid no?

Quite simply, it no longer fits into today's DVD box formats

Meh. I'm not seeing anything there to justify spending an extra AU$30 (I'm still trying to justify spending AU$90 to begin with).

That "authentic" map looks even less "authentic" than the SH3 map, and is certainly less "authentic" than the AoTD map.

I was holding off my preorder until I found out what the collectors edition was going to be all about. I like a good tin box for my games but other than that, I dont see much of anything to jump up and down about.

Most people already have that map from SH3. The music will already be on the game disc, and it probably wont be too hard to put that on a cd to listen to.
This official guide, I wont be surprised if its also in .pdf form that will be on all the game disks. And even if its not, oh well.

The only thing that peaks my intrest is the "7 unique sub and ship skins". I'm a sucker for good authentic U-boat camo patterns, but that's not quite enough incentive for me to bite.

No sale Ubisoft, I'm off to go preorder the standard copy through SubSim.
