You'll be able to turn most helpers off. If not through the game's options, then through easy mods. Difficulty depends on the following:
- campaign files, giving convoys more escorts and making them tougher, more air cover
- enemy sensors
Both SH3 and SH4 lacked a bit of difficulty in the campaigns. Sensors weren't bad though and the game could prove very difficult at times. Even if the SH3 vanilla campaign will be flawless, there's bound to be mods to make it even more realistic. Sensors should be as simple to mod as they are now.

The problem is that depending on enemy sensors, your tactics can change dramatically. It's easy to make it completely unforgiving but I'd rather be able to use the real tactics used in the war. I'm hoping for a layered approach to sensors. In SH3 and SH4 the enemy is stuck in a loop waiting for you to pass certain thresholds. I'd like them to use real sensors this time and even spook themselves through false readings. It would be fun to see the escorts suddenly start attacking empty water because they've passed above a wreck or move away from the convoy because of a tired watchman that thinks he spotted a periscope in rough waters.

Oh please may it be that that you can turn off healthbars. It will resemble Battlestations Pacific. While that was a fun game, there was no realism

You are worrying over nothing mate. There is no question about being able to disable the health bars.

Of coarse they will have an option to turn off health bars in realism settings . However i think as a first person player a health bar for yourself will be a great addition . Think of how more realistic it will be to have CO2 and cold exposure and wounds etc tied to your health bar .

IMHO may be better tied not to healthbar, but to the different first person view HDR effects, similiar to the rain drops, like for e.g. color diminishing, DOF decreasing and so on, may be sound distortion

P.S. As about ships' healthbars, they would be helpful at least for ships' damage system modding/tweaking

A general health bar for the player's boat would be exceptional. As the curent game is I am constantly wondering just how beat up I realy am after some depth charge attacks. I remember one time I lost my #2 torpido tube, both my radar and radar warning antenas damaged my forward bateries and lost one of my AA guns; on top of that I almost lost the ship to crush depth twice due to flooding but managed to pull away from the fight. Thinking I was badly damaged and one depth charge away from cracking a hole in the boat I headed for home with torpidos still on board and ample fule. Turns out I only took a 2% hit to hull integraty.

If I had known that I would have kept going and a health bar I could have told me that. Pluss the captin and crew would know exactly what the health bar would tell the player so there is no realisum conflict.

Nice vidio by the way, if only I spoke some German though. I kind of want to know what they were going on about.

Since I received fast and great help with my latest problem, I'd like to return the favor to you guys. I have translated the german video commentary to english as accurate as I can do it. Maybe there's some info in there you were eager to get. Enjoy!

Quote:
*video starts at 10:15*

Today we will have a first look on the new "Silent Hunter V". The submarine simulation offers first of all an all-new interface, which is way easier to use than in the previous games.

*video switches to periscope screen*

Now let's head over to the first mission, which we will use to get you acquainted with everything. In the upper right corner we have the possibility to switch camera - to the big map for example. Additionally, we can check on crew and ship status here as well as last radio messages.

*video switches to 1st person*

Before we go on with the controls, we will also have a look at the inner parts of the submarine. Here, there's a lot to explore, and everything is just like in a submarine back in those days. Also, the different crew members can be talked to, although shortly after departure there's not much to talk about.

*video switches to engines room*

One last look goes towards the engines room. Again, everything here is just like in the well-known movie (he's referring to "Das Boot"). To stick to the movie, let's to a practice drill. On the lower left, you can set the depth of your submarine as well as your speed.

*video switches back to periscope*

Let's get back to controls. How do you actually navigate your submarine? Pretty easy: In the area map which we have decreased in size in the lower left, you can set waypoints and smoothly move them around. This has direct influence on your course. By the way: Our traveling speed is set up very high right now, to show the process of navigation to you in a better way.

*video switches to outer camera*

For the end of the demonstration, let's have a look at another mission. Here we have to defend a harbor which is attacked...

*video switches to map screen*

...by a big enemy fleet. Here things get working quite fast and we prepare our torpedo tubes.

*video switches back to periscope*

Here, it is important to set the torpedo's depth correctly, so that the torpedo doesn't pass the target. When we are all set, the word is "Fire!", and soon the first torpedo is in the water. And since it's so much fun, the second torpedo follows right away!

At beginning of 2010, it's your turn. Then, "Silent Hunter 5" is released for PC.

I miss the engine dials and the compass on the lower right corner of the interface. Where'd it go?

Thanks for the translation, Asa.
