I'm wondering what the hell they were doing so close to the live-fire range.

It's a perfect example of "Doing STUPID in the NO STUPID ZONE".

5 klicks is the blink of an eye to a fast moving jet....

Reminds me of how a similar accident ocurred with another pilot accidentally strafing a school someplace on the East Coast (thankfully it was empty).

In all seriousness, YES.

The live-fire range for aircraft had been there since the 1940s' before the town was even built. So some dumbass decided to build the school only 5 miles away from the firing range.

Obviously, parents were upset and they wanted the firing range shut down after the incident and I never heard anything of it afterwards.

When I was EOD out at Hill, we had a similar situation.

An A-10 was SUPPOSED to be doing a dry run on this target. We were transiting the area with range clearance. Suddenly we became aware that the run was hot.

A GAU-8, even with training rounds, can ruin your day real fast.

Never saw the fat team chiefs unass a vehicle quite so fast before. :rotfl:

Of course this is only funny because no one got hurt. Believe me, we were not laughing at the time.
