I think the picture demonstrates a pretty good eye for speed over course
wouldnt you?

lol yes actually,
just enough speed to have the bows find water again,
and just enough course to have his bows find the bottom!

must be a fun ride on the turm too!

i always used big boats since Silent hunter 1.

IX-B is the best choice during the happy days until late 1941.

6 torpedoes tubes ready and 15 reloads, very good for attack convoys and
very fast surfaced, i reached 19 knts in calm waters with this sub.
More fuel, or more speed at the same range.

But remember that you have to adapt your tactics, for example don´t raid ports, german submarines rarely raid ports (scapa and what more ??). And crash dive as soon you see an aircraft, because it takes a few extra seconds to dive.

In my last patrol i sneaked to the mediterranean with my iX-B boat and survive to return to the atlantic again (1941)

Later, you can change to a smaller VII or continues with a IX-B but operating far patrol grids , navigate at deck awash or get a snorkel and radar detectors as soon as possible to try to survive to 1944-45 .

Type VII is good in the later years for his size during scorts attacks and fast dive times. the torpedo load is reduced , but is not important in late years, because allied countermesures make attacks very difficult and the war is lost anyway.

if you want a little revenge buy a XXI boat in 1944.
17 knts dived , radar detectors in the snorkel and a lot of firepower, no more creep at 7 knots waiting the death.

What was it like playing Silent Hunter 1? And are you telling me that I am going to lose my dictatorship of the North Sea as the war progresses onwards? Shucks...

My choice of boat is an IX. There's several reasons for this:

-ability to see exotic places. I love the Caribbean!
-a lot of torpedoes. In my current career I played IX until early 1944, and never had problems with external torpedo loading. It's safe.
- heavy flak arnament. I'm playing GWX 1.03, and with the 2 cm vierling and two dual 2 cm guns I usually shoot down any aircraft that comes into my way. Haven't lost a single crewmember yet, because the planes will be shot down before they release their bombs
- no problems with port raiding. Even if the boat is big, it's very possible to sneak undetected to harbors. During the last five patrols I have raided the ports of Guantanamo Bay, San Juan (score: two large tankers and a liner ) Santo Domingo, S.t Helena (score: two cruisers, medium liner, large tanker, large cargo and a fishing boat), Cape Town and Bridgetown.

So my message is: Don't be afraid of IX even if the boat is big. It's the boat of success!

I tried a IXB once... I lasted about 25 minutes with it.
When submerged the thing just sits there like a dumb s**t, it doesn't frickin do anything!
The war in the Atlantic is about Typ VIIs for me. the ultimate predator. For the much the same reasons others have posted.... its agility, reliability, toughness, stealth, and sea worthyness.

:hmm: WOW!

Personally, if you want to really challenge yourself in SH3/GWX, I would suggest using either the Type II or the IXD2.

The Type II is very fun to patrol with, esp in the Black Sea. The challenge of this boat is the limited torpedo loadout. You have to make every one count to have a successful patrol. This boat is the 'Hit and Run' boat of the Kriegsmarine.

The Type 9 D2 (my fav) is a huge challenge if you use it to patrol and attack convoys. It is easily detectable surfaced & submerged, however it's loadout is easily enough to destroy entire convoys. Do not be led into thinking the game is unplayable if using a D2, in fact I can usually finish the war in a D2 (about 75% of the time), it's not easy but is very doable. The dive time sucks on this boat but you get enough warning to crash dive (some of the time). Fully kitted out, this boat is a match for anything in the air. The main reason I favour this boat is because it has enough diversity to enable me to conduct a long or short patrol. Long being US coast picking off single merchant or short being UK coast hunting convoys.
