Okay, I made a test earlier and indeed it seems to be only dependent on the ship's distance from the player's boat.
In the mission editor, I made a test mission and laid out a line of C2 cargo ships spaced 1km apart, out to 9km, and set them to all move in a parallel fashion (just so that they had a wake). I then started the mission and used the freeview to fly over and look at each ship. The first few showed no signs of this jagged/flickering interface between the ship and the water. But once I got to the 5th or 6th ship, it started to appear. By the time I got to the 9th, it was quite pronounced. Then on the horizon I saw another smoke stack - a destroyer from the random layer I imagine. Went over to that, maybe 12-13km from my boat's position, and the effect was very noticeable! So I'm pretty sure that's all that does it - distance from your U-boat. Secondly, the effect is more noticeable when the camera is high up, looking down. If at water level you don't really see it. Whether any other factors are involved, I'm not sure. But I'd say it's inherent to the engine, and that maybe most people have it - just some people didn't notice? Just for the record, I was using the standard weather (5m/s wind, clear) and 9am as the mission time. AA was set to 2x, AF was off. I'm running an old Radeon 9800 Pro in stock 1.4b. |
