Only one career has lasted all the way, from outbreak of war to the end, and that was U-77. She was an type VIIC U-Flak at the end and I sailed her home to Willhemshaven after receiving Doenitz order to give up.
Started in vanilla and ended in an heavily modded version of the game.

That Type II guy in GWX was me.

And yes, I've done it now FOUR times (when I posted in the thread originally it was only 2 times). The trick is where you do your hunting. For the Type II, especially the Type IID, the dive time is the thing that's saved my *** so many times I've lost count.

But, if I remember, my trick for my first two careers was to move ASAP to the Black Sea and the Flotilla that operated there.

Since then, I've also gotten another two careers that lasted the entire war. One was completely done in a VII, the other started in a II before moving to a XI, then a VII around 42.

I guess you have to be lucky, but also take VERY VERY VERY few risks. I rarely do anything aggressive if I'm not 100% sure that I can survive the consequences.

NEVER SURRENDER! Download trainers for unlimited ammo, fuel, batteries, whatever you may need! FIGHT FOREVER! Give the Allied scum HELL! Hey, if that fails, sail to Japan. War's still on there.:rotfl:

If I remember this right, you can keep going to May 30, 23:59 -45 and then the game will CTD.
No one will shoot back at you but you will not get any renown for what you sink after the wars end.

I guess I'm the exception but I retire my captains (if still alive) after 8-10 patrols or so. I also don't particularly enjoy starting in 39 and rarely do. Too easy (boring) and no fun torpedo & sub upgrades to play with.

Very few captains started in 39. In fact I would guess the majority started in 42 or later. Might as well play it like it was.

Fired the first eel of war in 39 and got retired in late 41, after 15 patrols BdU directed me to show some old tricks to those poor kids.

Arctic campaign in 42 ended up during 3rd patrol... sunk by a plane.

Current 3rd campaign in summer 43, 2nd patrol, crawling underwater, taking beating from the planes all the time, heading slowly home with 10k, maybe we'll find a convoy afterall...

(those are campaigns from GWX and my recent attempt of the game)
