See? I TOLD you there was a reason real captains liked the aft gun. I just couldn't figure out what it was. Of course once a real life naval gunner says his piece the situation becomes much clearer! Just another thing that isn't modeled in the simulation.

Up front.

I prefer to present minimal profile when the shooting starts and the shooting starts while I'm still closing. Stern placement takes quite a bit of manuvering in comparison -- not to mention you have a small window of opportunity if you attempt minimal profile, and a very large cross-section if you turn parallel to fire.

I was going to comment on other real gunfighters who also only carried one gun, but I like yours better.

I read once that one of the WWII skippers, when asked the question "front or rear" replied..."Front. I'm planning on attacking not running away".

I think it might have been Dick O'Kane, but I'm not sure.

I want guns everywhere. The more the better.

If they let me, I would have 5s fore and aft with twin 40s fore and aft on the conn.

Oh wait I forgot. Rocket launchers. Yeah I want rocket launchers too.

Why not twin 8", like the Surcouf? I mean if your going to festoon your boat with guns and create all that drag, at least mount something impressive.

Stern just because I must show off my navigational kung-fu to chase an armed merchant and keep his gun masked while keeping my stern unmasked.

I prefer the Bow Gun because I can't see past the conning tower to the rear. I prefer to look at what I'm shooting at. Annie Oakley I'm not!

Training the Gun Crew on Sampans helps muchly when you go against a real target. Practice, practice and then practice some more. On my 6th Patrol on S-23, my gun crew consists of a Chief and PO1 Gunners Mates, and my bar is all GREEN. During Patrol 5, they sunk two merchants with no assist from torpedoes.

Both earned Bronze Stars!

4 tubes forward. 1 deck gun forward. It must be an S boat thing. I feel if I have to wreck stuff on my way out or to save my stern, I made a bunch of wrong choices not conducive to boat or crew survival. V/R, CL

Stern.

In my experience, when using the deck gun it's either to finish off a merchant that's not worth a fish (no real maneuvering needed), or as a total last resort gunfighter in which case I'm running away, shreiking like a little girl, sending some 4" love to try and keep them occupied.

Plus, I can keep an eye on the chasers, and make maneuvers to maximize seperation in the least amount of time.

Always the one to have my whole cake I'd go for both. Besides the deckkies I have are less effective than stock. So, two may make up for it.
