@ GakunGak

An IT guy at my office was telling me that loading the desktop with icons has some sort of adverse affect on memory or something...

So now that rattles round in my head whenever I get too many icons on the desktop. I've got one "games" folder on the desktop that holds all my game icons. Honestly, I've never really noticed any difference though...

I think the most interesting part of this thread is seeing what icons others have installed!

I saw someone still had Fleet Command and Mech Commander 2 installed

aaronblood, just send my desktop to your IT guy and tell him that my Desktop is 6.92 GB "heavy" and I have 17 icons in tray area, alongside with clock and my PC boots in less than a minute with 45% fragmented HDD....
Then post back and tell me his opinion....

Yep, that one's really cool
It's a shame that this game won't run on my machine. I think I would at first just start playing on 1x to look at the graphics XD

Here are some others:

And some older ones:

And some still older ones:

Of course I'm envious because I don't have any to show.

I have to keep reminding myself: "when you see a plane press C"

My windows looks just like it did when win98 first came out, I detest that rounded-off blue XP taskbar

Hi Gakun (and aaronblood),

I'm an IT guy and the number of icons on your desktop would not have a measureable effect on your performance. And the actual size of the files on your desktop has absolutely no effect at all on performance

Desktop wallpapers don't eat up that much memory. If your screen resolution is 1280x1024x32 then that works out to a bitmap of nearly 4mb. Not really that much when you probably have 1 or 2 gb of memory.
And also, when you are playing a game fullscreen windows is smart enough to notice nothing has used that chunk of memory for a while and the bitmap for your wallpaper will be paged out to your swapfile so the memory is freed up to be used by your game - you might notice this when you alt-tab back to your desktop or quit the game, windows has to page the wallaper back in and sometimes you may see it actually get drawn. This is a good reason to NOT disable your paging file... if you have then windows can't swap your wallpaper out to disk, meaning you effectively have 4mb less memory available for your game

Very nice pics - just snagged the top one for my desktop

As a side-note - have you tried the zune theme for XP? I hate the default "fisher-price" theme and never used any theme until microsoft released the zune theme. Makes me wonder why MS didn't release more themes.
Check it out. Its actually not bad

You can download it from microsoft here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=75078

Hi johnno74, nice of you to drop by...
A litle details, 1 GB of RAM, resolution 1152*864, and it's true when I alt+tab or exit a fullscreen game, my, icons need to be redrawn and wallpaper is black until is remapped again...... My wallpaper is 175KB in size, and i'm good with it...
Everything you said is true... I was testing my baby under stress and it handled itself very well...
Since you are an IT, could you solve a litle problem of mine?
