Very interesting stuff Mookie, great job!

But, do we know whether they were 'retired', transferred to other positions and was it on request?

From what I have read (admittedly little on US subs in Pacific on WWII) there was quite a lot of stress involved so COMSUBPAC did grant transfer requests from especially the less successful skippers.

Crew transfers were also quite common.

But, apologies if I sound stubborn, it still strikes me as odd that COMSUBPAC would have a standing policy per se of 'retiring' successful skippers.

Unless, there was some kind of 'rotation' program involved, but why breakup successful crews in the middle of a shooting war?

Or were things so successful and easy-going for COMSUBPAC to allow them to experiment in their human resources dept?

I read a post over at the mods forum that somebody did a fix for the early
retirement by modding the end dates in the campaign layers. I don't
remember who at the moment but go there & check it out....

I just went into the Flotilla.upc file and changed all the retirement dates to null, 'cause sugar boats never go out of style.

I'm using that mod, and just got the exact same retirement notice. It's Ok though, I just started a new carreer and made the new skipper a protege of the famous JT Toliver. I tell tales to the green crew about some of the hair rasing patrols I had with him.

Most skippers, successful or not were rotated back to the states for new construction (which usually meant spending an extended period of time away from the main war effort), or re-assigned to a desk job. Several skippers actually requested to be relieved of command even if they had been aggressive enough to please the higher-ups, simply because of exhaustion. However there was an acute shortage of qualified officers to command fleet boats so many returned to command front line boats, even those who were relieved of command early in the war because of their poor performances and lack of aggression.

If you look at the list of the top 76 submarine skippers by number of ships sunk provided in Appendix G of Clay Blair's Silent Victory two commanding officers made a total of 10 war patrols; John E. Lee (S-12, Grayling, Croaker) and James C. Dempsey (S-37, Spearfish, Cod). Two made nine patrols; Henry G. Munson (S-38, Crevalle, Rasher) and Thomas L. Wogan (S-34, Tarpon, Besugo). Then there are three that made 8 war patrols and the rest stand between 7 (10 skippers) and 2 patrols.

and indeed if i mae a game id make it right and make sure it was playable out of the frakkin box

It's a bloody game, you can play it just how you want. Start a new campaign, reload the last one, whatever, I think it would be foolish to judge UBI and the entire game 'cause of this....
