Hey, I manage desktop support for a business about 200 PC's, and three times I've seen CD's become shrapnel, taking the drive with it.
CD's yes it was fairly common.

The industry adapted with better materials for DVD's. Although it does still happen it is extremely rare and usually when the DVD was damaged to begin with.

Im not sure who is going to win that "betamax" war.

If cost for the player has any impact (and I believe it will), HD-DVD will likely win:

HD-DVD player: $299
Blu-Ray player: $699
