Fearless, you can avoid that 17 minute wait on loading the captain's log if you like. Don't know if they've fixed that in 1.2 but there is a sure-fire way to put an end to the delay. You won't like it, but it works, I did it yesterday.

In windows explorer, browse to:

C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\My Documents\SH4\data\cfg\SaveGames\

Then sort by date with newest modified files at top. The top folder is your most recent save game. It will have an 8-digit hex number for the name, i.e. "0000002c" or "00000010". Note that sorting by name will not get them in correct order, so the newest save is at top or bottom. You need to sort by date modified.

Once you've done that, look for a file called "SaveData.rmr". This file contains all your "Radio Messages Received", i.e. contact reports, war news and so on. Delete or rename the file (i.e. "SaveData.rmr-bug") then run the game and load your log. It will load instantly!

Downside is you will no longer have your contact reports in the log. Upside is, the 17 minute wait is history , and the recent contacts on the nav map are still there! This will NOT delete your transmitted reports (i.e. status or contact reports that you have sent to ComSubPac) and will NOT delete your "Captain's Log" with details of your kills.

Note that, if you do this and then reload a save game from before the one where you deleted SaveData.rmr, all your received messages will be back (as of that save point), and you'll be back to the slow loading of the log. If you need to do that, do another save and then delete/rename the SaveData.rmr from the new save folder!

ATR-42, sounds like you tried it and it worked for you? If so, glad I could help. Like you, I totally quit looking at the log when the delay got too long.

Then I put on ParaB's "Less Radio Messages" mod while in port and that helped a LOT but eventually it starts slowing down again. Not nearly as bad as before but still noticably slower than at the start of the patrol. And I know some guys like to see ALL the contacts, and ParaB's mod gets rid of all but the close ones.

At any rate it works, but it sucks that you lose all your previous incoming radio traffic from the log. But hey, is that convoy report you got 2 weeks ago still important?

Possibly you could edit it in notepad and remove all but the most recent messages, I haven't tried that yet so I don't know what the effect would be.

One important thing to note is, the log will start filling up again and getting slow again. So you will have to do "housecleaning" from time to time, if it gets too slow. Just delete "SaveData.rmr" from your current save folder.

If the forum mods want to put this tip on the official Mod list then I'm all in favor! Though it's not a mod really. It's just manually deleting the message log!

Well it's 1510hrs (Z+12) here on Tues 17/04/2007 here in the land of the Long White Cloud and still no sign of "The Patch".

Guess we are just too far ahead of the rest of you guys north of the equator.

Shame to see my prediction that the forced retirement issue is not addressed in the patch.

Sucking being right all the time.

Is forced retirement issue? I though it was a realistic feature.

Yes, it's considered a realism feature, however there's supposed to be an option to spend points on staying in your boat if you have enough accumulated. Anyone been able to use that option?

I think so too, during 1942, almost 30 % of the skippers were relieved from a command. Most because they lacked aggressivenes and/ were wasting too many torpedoes for bad results.
