I love SHIV for its... charm. Yes, the game is charming. I just cannot help but feel happy when I spend a few minutes on the deck as the rain pours down and I hear the water crashing onto the deck.

I've completed my 5th patrol now, and Ill take a break. But do not think I'm fed up with it. I just want to take this game in bits. It was the same with SHIII. The game was charming. Sometimes charm makes up for a lot of other little defects... just like with wives ^^

game is good, bugs are there like any other newly released game, stalker has bugs, so does sh4, so did wacraft 1 when it came out, same with startcraft when it came out, and the same goes for millions of other games out there. there are bugs, nevertheless sh4 is a good submarine simulator, and the graphics make it a game also which is a good combo. sh4 rules end of thread.

The lead designer posted about half way down in this thread today http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...=108874&page=3.

They have less time to do it, but is the sh3 engine, modified for improved graphics, so, a lot of work was done, perhaps the new enviroment effects take too many time in the work.
Well, you can always go play that other WWII subsim that came out recently...Oh, wait...Ain't nothin ever gonna be perfect, enjoy what you have.

I can only say I partially agree with the original post in this thread. I do think we have a right to complain, after all the company got my $50 and I did not get my $50 bucks worth, at least not yet.

I do not expect perfection, nor do I expect the Dev team to make a product to my personal preferences. However, they dropped the ball big time on a few issues and I don t know how they could have missed them.
Just to mention a few: so called sound effects, a big part of the immersion of the game, considering the state of the art and what has already been done I think the consumer deserves much better than what we got. Same goes for crew voices, every sim since AOD had better crew voices than what we got in SHIV.

We all have stacks of computer sims that never matched our expectations, pay the money and after the dissappointment let them sit on the shelf until they get thrown away. Meanwhile, the company has our (now their) money. I think the mods are great but a bunch of talented people shouldnt have to donate their time to fix something that the Company got paid for.

I hope this isnt true but I suspect that flashy eye candy sells computer games and the Company put most of their efforts into eye candy at the expense of gameplay.
There are a few sims that I have truly enjoyed, and that delivered the goods in terms of gameplay: Sub Battle Simulator, no graphics or sounds but great gameplay, played that sim more than all others combined, Battle of Britain, Thier finest Hour, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, Silent Hunter I, Silent Hunter III, European Air War,IL2 Sturmovik.

A new sim in a certain genre should start where the last one left off and take it further, not take a step behind. Just my opinion, WHIW. Joe S

Stone me for it, I love SH4. So it might have a few bugs... they honestly don't bother my gameplay. In fact, I've found awesome workarounds for most, some which make the game even MORE realistic.

I'll wait for the patches, sure... but in the meantime, there's ships out there to be eaten.

A really great sim, with huge potential.

I recognize that I might not be nowadays fully impartial. I'm not a just-arrived gamer who has bought in the shop for 40$ (or whatever) a DVD box with something called "Silent Hunter 4" inside, but.....I am VERY happy to see we have finally got to the end of a long way and have SH4 here.

Go on, those of you who critisize anything. You might be right on some or even many aspects. But I made the long and lonely "desert crossing" and I see what the present and near-future brings: The best ever pacific submarines game. And I'm happy with what I see coming!

I have waited too long to see this, just to waste my time now in whining about some bugs that will be addressed soon.

@Kaptain Phillips: I'm with you
I can only add my signature to that (except for the Pacific Aces Dev part, where I was no member in).

The Romanian Dev team just delivered another excellent simulation of naval warfare, which is a niche market within a niche market anyway, just to mention that in case someone forgot about it. It's been a long way, and albeit they might have gotten some things wrong/bugged, I've been so sick of running U-Boats against the same kind of convoys over and over and over, and am glad to be back in the Pacific - "Let's party like it's 1996". Hell, we are talking ELEVEN YEARS here. Some of the ppl posting on these boards weren't even yet outa their diapers at that time. In this context, I found the notion of some ppl that "Next subsim must be Atlantic!!!!111!!" hilarious, and from what one can gather from sales figures as of yet, it wasn't exactly a mistake to ignore that either.

There were some good points in your post, Joe, but to be fair, you're not being asked to spend any more money on the game. No doubt, there are some games that once released, are never updated (EA Games, anyone?) but not with the SH series. The patches are free and what you'd get once the devs (and dare I say the modders) are through, would be more than worth it, in my opinion - just look at GWX. If that mod had been implemented into the stock game, and released as SH3, then the value would've shot up. But instead, its free for everyone to use, and its basically SH 3.5.

Dont lose hope

Yes. There are things we'd like to see that arent in there.

But remember amongst all your complaints, that there's a team of devs in Romania working their butts off to make up for it, and working their butts off to bring us a truly great sim.

That cant be achieved when the best source for bug information and suggestions - the players and this community - whines and complains that something or other doesnt work, or something or other isnt in there, knowing that Emil and his troops are doing their best to rectify the situation.

Dont get me wrong. There have been numerous constructive, and very helpful posts and threads, and I appreciate how people are trying to give everyone temporary fixes till the new patch comes out. But for christ sake, enjoy the game whilst you wait. Remember, time spent complaining means less time finding something you like.

That's one for the ages, great statement, KP. You hit the nail on the head. Used to be a lot more people with that attitiude around here... I miss it.

A glitch or two?????

That's like calling the Ice Age a minor cold snap.

Get real people. I'm sitting here looking at over 500 PC game boxes on the shelves in my game room collected and played over the last 15 or so years and SH4 is right up there in the top 10 of most buggy games on release I've ever played. In fact I'm trying real hard to think of one that was buggier and all I can come up with is Man of War published by Strategy First about 8 or 10 years ago and 360's WWII in Europe game - Command Decision or something like that.

Why can't y'all call a spade a spade? Ubi blew it. The developers blew it. If SH4 was beta tested at all would be a real big surprise AND if it actually was the beta testers all ought to be taken out into the woods, stripped naked, covered with honey and staked out on a fire ant hill - along with the devs and the UBI suits that let this abomination out the door unfinished. That's SH4's major problem. It isn't finished, it wasn't tested (no way).

Sorry but playing nice isn't gonna cut it this time.

How can you blame the devs? They did what they could. They dont exactly submit a game when they think its done, you know.

I have STALKER, and let me clarify that the bugs in STALKER merely provide a minor speedbump against gameplay.

The bugs in SH4 are myriad, a virtual minefield with machine gun towers and random arty strikes between you and an enjoyable experience.

Theres a difference between "oops, we let a few bugs slip out with the game." and "FOR GODS SAKE SOMEONE CALL AN EXTERMINATOR!"

Hi All,

What's going on here? I've been coming to this Great Site now for years. One of Main reasons for me doing so was that Everyone had such a Positive attitude. While I rarely post I would always visit, to see what was new in the Subsim Community. I have every Silent Hunter Sim from the original Commanders Edition to Wolves of the Pacific, including the Pacific Aces Mod. Frankly I don't understand what's got so many Folk steamed up. The Developers worked very hard to put together this Sim, & for folk to try to make it seem as though it's half baked is just wrong. I see post were Folk are saying the Developers don't visit this Site & such. That's just wrong, they do. How is it that so many of the features that so many folk here have asked for are included in this fine Sim. Are there some Bugs? Judging from all of the negative post I've seen I'd say yes there are some. I personally haven't experienced any. I've been on two patrols, sunk about 28,000 tons of shipping, had hell depth charge out of me twice & I'm just loving this Sim.

I remember reading quite a while back right Here at this site about why there wasn't that many Subsims. The article went on to explain Subsims are somewhat complicated. If one wants to play & be effective & get maximum enjoyment out of the Sim, one must invest time learning how it's done. Well that eliminates a lot of Folk. The article went on to explain that Subsim Enthusiast are a demanding lot. That Developers don't relish the thought of puttting considerable time & effort in bringing a Sim to life only to have their efforts go unappreciated. Finally there was Money. Everyone wants to make a profit. Notice how money was last in the equation. The Developers are just as passionate about these Sims as we are. I'm sure They are working very hard to correct whatever Bugs that some Folk are having. A little patience isn't to much to ask now is it?

Sorry for the rant, I find it disturbing that so many Folk are knocking this Sim. It's Good right now & it's going to get even better. You wait & see.

Even if i have said bad things about SH4, and if i'm still be verry worried, i support the devs team with all my heart.

I pray for this team for finishing this game, i really hope cause i love subsim, and we have not a lot of choice. So bless them for their work.

BUT : If something don't work, someone must complain. Sometimes, it is reported with maybe too much passion, but it must be reported. We cannot shut the eyes, and must be objective. SH4, in his actual statement is really almost "borderline". Never saw a so awful rendering image quality, while the promotion was based on graphics .. Really hope we will have FSAA cause with some filtering, the game will become beautiful. The bugs can be repaired, but the choice of the graphic engine make me disapointed.

Really Dev team if you read this, Bless you for have done yet, but keep up the work hard, a lot of things remains to do. We are confident on you.

Thanks for your post.

Yes... the atmosphere here has been distinctly non-Subsim-like around here for the last couple of weeks. If you note the registration dates and post counts of some of the more vocal members you will see that SH4 has brought in a lot of people that are somewhat new to this forum.

While that is a great thing it also means that they are not used to the level of maturity expected here. They don't understand (yet) that the purpose of this site ,well, one of them, is to develop a community that works with the developers to nurture our hobby... not spew venom about their work and then say "But I Support the DEVs".... like that makes all the difference.

Some think that this is a place to vent their frustrations and post their childish rants, and it is not. Neal has shown remarkable patience with a lot of them, and the Moderators are taking our cue from him, but I have known Neal long enough to know that even his patience has a limit, and some people are approaching that limit rapidly.

Anyway... this sort of this is, for the most part, self-healing. People who just want to bitch will quietly disappear, casual gamers that don't have the patience for a Subsim will drift away and that will leave the genuine enthusiasts. Things will be back to normal in a month or two.

In the meantime I think a little light housekeeping may be just around the corner.
