Ditto. Ive TRIED Playing early war. I get bored, FAST. Yeah sure ive been depth charged before 42, but, damn they sucked. Not even close. Early war active sonar is laughable at best. Your under their sonar cone at about 200 meters. Nothing left to do but creep along at 100 RPM's or less, and wait tell they give up and go away. That, and Ive gotten away with bloody murder in night surface attacks.

The closest ive gotten to being sunk was by an aircraft out of freetown (current patro in 6/41l acutally) that appeared 4800 meters to port. Too late to dive.. Went to flank speed, then gave a full port rudder as he was about 2000 meters off. His bombs overshot me like i figured they would, straighted the rudder, crash dived, end of story.

Now.. 43-44... now were talking FUN!

Hey, it's my first GWX campaign, I'm checking out the new and improved realism... I completely agree that it's too easy to attack ports, since factors like currents, shore forces, muddy water and not to mention AI reaction are not present. But I had to find out, hadn't I?

Damn it!!! It happened again. This time it is a pure laugh at best!!! I leave Lorient and on the way out with some TC to get going, my idiot of a navigator hits a German merchant. Being I have no hull integrity scale anymore, I repair it and move on. I did not hit it that hard. I boogie on down to BE94 and low and behold a fat convoy . I do my thing and sink a pyro ,damage a few others. I head for 160m and bang, smash, hiss, WTF where is all the water coming from? Oh good God! My boat was damaged more than I thought. All hands dead, ship lost, chief engineer cursed at until the boat is crushed and extinquishes all life . You guessed it.....patrol number 2

I think I just need to stay in port and scrap barnicles or something

Just as long as I'm not the cabin boy

AVGWarhawk, what year, flot, and boat you using?

Not meaning to be insulting, but do you need some pointers, or are you intentionaly running around with reckless abandoned *trying* to push your luck?

1940 and the last one was my screw up. Hit a merchant in port, repaired it and carried on. Really did not think much about it. I went 160m after attacking a convoy and apparently my boat hull damage was way low. 160m did me in :rotfl: :rotfl: I guess I should have taken it back to the barn after hitting the merchant while I was in port for full repairs.

Ok, i think Herr AVGWarhawk needs to go scrape the bilges. That is, he's not running around the Casino Bar with Bernard.

I'm in port after my 14th GWX patrol....almost 30K on this one. I tried the nightime attack of a convoy that was attacked earlier by a wolfpack...my remaining torps were a problem.

My Kptlt Gerhard Kohlus is just shy of 15K in reknown, and has 413K+ in tonnage clocked in since beginning in Sept 39 (it's now early Oct 1940).

After my first career ended in 39 with GWX I learned quickly the same strategies won't work. I'm in late 40 now 8 patrols in on my second career and just got my IXB. BTW, Dunkirk in 39 is bugged IMO in the game. Destroyers detect you but don't move. You can sink ships all day. So I just avoid it to keep the integrity of the game.

I've learned to play it safe in GWX and not be greedy. For me it's no port raiding, no taking on DD, no Channel/Gibraltar and defintely no taking on aircraft. I'm happy to take out the largest 2 in a convoy and sneak away, or the easy loners. Even then I've had a few exciting very (very) close calls. I'm sure we've all been there, 150m on the sea floor flooding everywhere getting hammered by 3 DD with air and batteries running out - only to somehow make it out alive. It's intense immersion like that which is the beauty of SH3/GWX...and scary to think about 43-44.
