![]() The new "Dune" movie was released down here today. I haven't seen it yet, but the reviews all say that it's very much "Style over Substance". Rumour has it that there's more "Dune" movies in the offing. So it's gonna be a franchise like "Star Wars" or "James Bond" ?????? ![]() ![]() I'll give a proper review once I've seen it myself.

Worth watching
"Hidden Figures tells the story of three African-American women who worked as computers to solve problems for engineers and others at NASA. For the first years of their careers, the workplace was segregated and women were kept in the background as human computers." They effectively brought the US astronauts into space, and to the moon.

"Dune" 2021. A review by me
![]() Ok, where to start? I must admit I was somewhat hesitant to see this flick.....but I'm glad I did. Wow, it lives up to the hype and then some. The only negative aspect was the sound level, it was beyond Industrial levels almost painful - earplugs definitely required ( no joke ). A bit of a preamble.... My interest in Dune began in the early '70s, with the original books. I was heavily studying Sassanid Persian History and Art at the time. So the early Dune books with their Feudal/Imperial Desert setting, and the cover art by Bruce Pennington really clicked, as they say. Then after the early books came "The Dune Encyclopedia" ( almost worth it's weight in gold now ), then the David Lynch movie - unfairly heavily panned by critics. I love it, it's come into it's own now. Then came the co authored books...for a new generation. Then the mini series/s, and lastly the new "Dune" movie just released. Both movies are very good. But the new one is outstanding. Great casting/acting. Faithful to the storyline, Dune fans know all the ins and outs and background. Sweeping, gorgeous settings. Costumes ![]() Not too much technology, it's post Butlerian Jihad after all. The 'thopters are beautiful ![]() Seeing as it's only part one a lot of characters are yet to be introduced. At almost 3 hours it's long and bladder challenging ![]() No spoilers. If you're a Dune fan go and see it, but take ear plugs.

^ Thank you for the summary. Missed it in the theaters, but i will have to see it!
I also read through Herbert's books in the 1970ies, he sure imagine-built a whole world with all the small details, a work comparable with Tolkien's Lord of the rings, but in the future... Always thought of the "Fremen" as being like the muslims, the story sometimes mirrors the situation in the middle east. OT: Funny enough my first book from Herbert was "Fenian Ram S1881" (the submarine from Frank Herbert’s 1956 novel "The Dragon in the sea") about a special nuclear sub 'tug' sneaking into enemy waters to pump oil and bring it back to the US. Thought it to be a quite tense and immersive psychological thriller back then..

^ Having already seen it and having read the books a few decades ago I can say the film is certainly faithful to the storyline and well worth a viewing. |
