Default Game CTD on opening menu

I just recently installed FOTRSU to a new, clean, SH4 1.5 install. Upon starting the game, it seems to load correctly. I get to the FOTRSU main menu without any issues. But then when I click any of the selections(US campaign, Single Mission, Museum, etc) it takes me to the next loading screen and then it crashes.

I'm pretty sure I installed FOTRSU correctly, its my only loaded mod, and its on a clean install. I have LAA active as well. Vanilla SH4 runs without any issues. I've had similar crashing issues with SH4 before, but that no longer occurs. Thank you for your time.

The usual questions: 1. Did you empty the Save folder (C:\Users \UserName \Documents \SH4) before running the modded game? 2. Where do you have the FotRSU-modded SH4 game installed? You cannot be in a Program Files folder 3. Are you certain that LAA is properly applied to the SH4.exe file? Open LAA again and load the proper SH4.exe file in again, and see if the tick-box is still set. If it is not, then the SH4 is probably write-protected. While in the game folder, right-click on the SH4.exe file and choose "Properties" at the bottom of the resultant context menu. On the first "Properties" page is the "Attributes" section. If the "Read-only" box is ticked, then the file is write-protected. Clear that tick-box, "OK" your way out, and run LAA again. It (LAA) does not throw and error if there is a failure. 3. If not one, two or three, or a combination or all of the above, then what are your computer specs? You can refer to the first page of this thread, or the download page, or pdf files in the Support folder of the mod for detailed help also.

I'm pretty sure all of these should be satisfied. I deleted the SH4 folder from documents entirely when I reinstalled, that should've cleared it right?

The textures for some of the ships are... strange

Is that normal?

Edit: I tried to insert an image, didn't work. Here's a link: https://imgur.com/a/ZymUg9k

Hello william"hawkeye"

You texture issue is not normal, as you can see my install bellow.

Can you confirm from propbeanies list above, that you have followed and have listed the requests please.
This way, we can get you up and running ASAP, and the required info is vital for us to do this.

All of the installation criteria are satisfied. Save folder is(was) empty, SH4 was not in program-files, LAA was active.

I have a few problems, the first being the texture bug as seen before. The other is that my sonar is not working.
I first noticed on my first war patrol in a Gar class submarine, stationed from Pearl Harbor, 1941. I was ordered to patrol just off Shikoku and Kinki. I was attacking a convoy(no hits scored) when I wanted to check the bearing of an enemy escort. I went to the sonar station only to find it non-functional. I could not turn the sonar handle thing at all, it was stuck at 0 degrees.

I then went to uninstall some of the extra mods I had. Doing so only seemed to make the problem worse. The entire sonar indicator thing had become a black void. I completely reinstalled the mod, but the issue was the same. https://imgur.com/a/iSsHPsn -as you can see here.

the sonar issue is also present on all US boats, but not the U-Boats. Also: US boats don't have any deck guns available, or any upgrades for that matter.

I have an intel i5-9600k, 8 GB of ram, and a GTX 1050,

I'll just reinstall from scratch, actually

IJN mines are set at 15 to 75 meters...depending on the location.

where off the coast were you patrolling? sea of japan? Area 4, 5, 6, 7?

I use the original map that came with SH4 as a guide for mined areas and always try to give them a wide berth. I was close to area 4 transiting south when this happened, about where the cursor is in this screenshot :

I thought I was well enough out to sea to avoid the fields along the coast in that area but perhaps not?

Do not save on top of the previous Save.

Now, FotRSU is based upon TMO v1.7, so it has the same set-up to where your submarine is visible beneath the surface, at depths up to roughly 160 feet. This also depends upon how "high" in altitude a plane over-flies your location. Generally speaking, you should be fine cruising around at 120 foot depth - usually. There are ASW airplanes constantly on patrol, such as the H6K, H8K, Lorna, and especialy Betty & Judy that can all carry regular bombs, as well as depth charges. Second of all, there are minefields out there, especially in Empire Waters. Here is a portion of the file that holds them:

There are more north of there, more south of there, more off of Formosa, off of Korea, in the Korean Strait, Tsushima Strait, Tsugaru Strait, etc... So you can indeed run into mines. Let us know though, where you were Lat / Long wise, and we'll see what we can see in the area. As another note, airplanes will usually fly over your last-known location twice. In 1944, it might be radar, and if it is, and it is something like a Betty or bigger, they will drop a couple of bombs near you last radar location, then come back and do a couple of more, further along your last-known travel line, and if they still have bombs left, might do a 3rd pass. If the plane used HF/DF to zero-in on your location, then they may not drop bombs the first pass. But if they saw you, they will drop and drop until they run out, then they'll call their buddies to come get ya...

Yes I emptied the save folder, yes the game is installed in a non-program files folder, yes I have LAA working, no I have not done any further modding. I HAVE been saving over old save files though, I usually keep two saves at any one time and overwrite the oldest each time I save. Perhaps that is the problem?

See the above screenshot for the approx. location I was when this last happened.

I'll start making a new save file each time and if this happens again I will take a more thorough look around for mines. If the old original SH4 map is no longer accurate vis-a-vis minefields is there a newer intel map somewhere for Fotrsu? I see the in game map accessed with the short wave radio has convoy routes and air cover marked but not minefields.

Dammit, I have crash to desktop.

I'm in port and it happens when I want to select the mission map on 11. dec. 1942.

I've tried the save files I have, and it seems like it cannot find a mission to give me.... it downright throws me out into windows.

Other save files from other earlier occasions when in harbour has no problem.

I've even tried changing the boat/crew etc.... but nope.

Good evening...:
- have you read the recommendations that the team gave you which I will call back for "xxx" times ... !! can be found via JSGME & Winrar from said mod ... !!! I doubt that your reading is enriching "there is no point in running .. you have to start on time" (Victor Hugo) I therefore recommend a new passage .. it does not hurt you will sleep better .. you will play less. . which is good for your health ..
what is your version of games? (except steam see recommendation)
anyway install in a directory created from any parts ex: (D: \ Sh4 \ Sh4_FOTRS \ sh4.exe)
if you use more than one mod I recommend "Multish4exe" (see screen)
now I don't like LAA adress .. I use the 4go patch (see the screen) which I find much better much less "CtD" I would even say none ... so far all at least for me ..
then the rest you have all on this screen .. so don't tell me that you can't do it I chew your job
now leave me alone to this FOTRS team .... who are working hard to get us a coherent mod ..
damn it guys no time for that kind of bull**** ............

Re-installing from scratch would be prudent. Just be sure that before you do the LAA, that the SH4.exe is indeed write-enabled, like this:

Depending upon your system, you might have to go on the "Compatibility" tab of that "Properties" page and do some edits there:

It varies from computer to computer as to what you might have to edit there - but make certain your LAA is indeed set correctly first.

My SH4 didn't come with a minefield map... - Mad Mardigan and I have been discussing this very subject all day, and for several months, s7rikeback and myself have been trying to come up with a way to display the "intelligence" on the NavMap itself, but all I can get is some crude "artwork" (hey, if Hunter can be called an "artist", then so am I)... Anyway, you appear to be east and south of several large minefields.

As Kal_Maximus_U669 mentions, just make certain you have followed instructions for the game install, mod activation and other set-ups. There are times, especially in the area you are, where there are sub hunter groups, so if you're doing high TC, they could also be attacking. At 1024x TC, every second in real time is over 17 minutes in game time... that's a lot.

What mod version are you using? Which port are you at? What boat were you first attempting to take out when it crashed? Did you see the game go to the "Orders" screen? What can you remember of the "Orders"? How are you attempting to change the boat and crew? As I understand it, you are in the Captain's Office, behind the desk, then you click on the map and then crash? Does it crash right away, or does it start to load, you see the progress bar, and then it crashes, or are you seeing the "No mission too difficult" motto, and then it crashes? Can you find your most recent Save folder? This is what an old one looks like on my computer:

I got into there by use of the Win10 short-cut bar in File Manager, else you would see the "true" path of "C:\Users \propbeanie \Documents \147 \data \cfg \SaveGames" From the "147 on down is the "Save" folder structure. I changed the "SH4" Save folder name with MultiSH4. We are only interested in the most recent Save, so copy that and paste it somewhere else (don't cut -copy). Now, right-click on it and using the 7-Zip menu, "Add to archive". If you have a place to upload the zip file to, such as Google Drive, or MediaFire, DropBox, etc., upload it, and PM me a link to the file please. OR - look inside the folder yourself, and open the "CareerTrack.upc" file. You can right-click on it, and use "Open With", and look for "Notepad" in there, or if you have Notepad++, it will be on that context menu with "Edit with Notepad++", and you could use it. We'll need to know the line "PlayerCurrentObjectives=ID94" line, which is usually about Line 35. the "...IDxx" usually would be different from "94", because that is the default assignment, in case something else goes wrong with the game... With the IDxx, we can attempt to see if there is something incorrectly set with the mission file.

The first time I had crashed dived after an aircraft contact and once down to 165 feet I reduced speed and continued on my way with time compression. Maybe 20 minutes in game time later I suddenly received damage and there was an explosion right on top of me. I figured because after diving I continued on the same heading that I was on while on the surface that the enemy continued to attack along my last known heading and got lucky. So I started changing course after crash diving 45-90 degrees (depending on the direction the enemy aircraft was approaching) and holding that heading for awhile before continuing on my original course. This worked for me for several patrols but I just had a second incident that has me scratching my head.

I was running on the surface just before dawn and detected an aircraft. I crashed dived and did my little doe see doe then continued on. As it was so close to first light I decided to just stay down and start my days submerged patrol early. I engaged time compression and about 4 hours after I dived while still at 165 feet I was knocked out of TC with "We're taking damage!", "This damaged!", "That damaged!". I went to the external camera right away and again there was a big explosion right on top of me. I have no idea the cause of the damage though, there were no vessels around, I saw no aircraft (nothing on radar after I emergency surfaced) and I was not in a mined area.

Is this some kind of glitch I am encountering or is there some other explanation? This second incident happened off the coast of japan in january 1944 if that makes any difference.

DW
I can only provide anecdotal info since I kept no records of when it happened to me, but it does happen, exactly as described above. Out of the blue, while at 165 feet depth for several hours, usually using a high TC to pass the time more quickly, I will get calls of damage occurring, usually to the AA guns and sometimes the periscopes and/or deck gun. Upon surfacing immediately, or using the F12 key to look around, there is nothing apparent. No mines below in any direction, no aircraft in sight or on radar, no ships, no nothing. This post won't help the investigation, if there is one, but it does serve to confirm that 2DarkWolf2 and I are not nuts!

The key may be the higher TC. I don't think I've ever had it happen at 1x time unless I was slow to order a crash dive upon detecting an incoming plane. It is after running a TC of say 1024 for 4 hours or so that it happens, not on the initial dive.

Next time it happens (and it will based on my experience) I'll capture the data.

radar Re: Damages out of nowhere...

On reading both posts, from 2DarkWolf2 & torp bait...

seem to recall there being a somewhat of a delay, after having dived for the depths to avoid incoming attacks from aircraft... of having damage reports... pardon the pun... 'flooding' in.

Am wondering if this might not be yet.. another case of that, by chance...

Know there's instances of taking damage/s, getting them repaired & after several hours in game going by, do a save & when you go & reload to continue... bam... there you are getting reports of those self same damages being re repaired... or finishing up... or shouts of damages then everything fades out & no damages are shown when you go to check the damage board... just some other examples of similar.. quirky end results that have cropped up before, that I recall.

M. M.
