Oh look, the sun's out again. Temperature back up to 41/5, humidity 51% (was 98% while it was snowing).

Snow, snow and more snow. Second day in a row schools are canceled Island wide. It's starting to pile up.

We got 1-2" of snow coming and some freezing rain. + another inch tomorrow. YES! No wind right now. Temp. 23F The back roof unloaded yesterday. The front one will most likely unload today.

Update, the 1-2" of snow is going to come overnite as freezing rain.

The freezing rain ended up straight rain. Temp was about 36F. Temp now down to 28F and it has been snowing since about 3PM. I think we will get that 3" they've been promising.

Old man winter taking his toll...

I went out this morning to make a trip to the store and found my passenger door window shattered into many little pieces. Victim of the latest arctic blast I think. The cold is rough on batteries and glass.
My buckboard is getting old. (19)

Moderately cool and raining right now. I see the east coast is getting blasted again. Not us.

I guess we got a consolation prize. The snow missed us south the other day.

No, just liability. $300.00 bill to get it fixed. Even a comprehensive policy wouldn't cover it with the standard $500.00 deductible.

That's life on this rock.

It's been an interesting winter this year. We had temperatures spike up into the 40's and 50's, melt all the snow off, then the temps plummeted into the minus double digits and the ground froze solid 26 inches down. Plays hell with some people's connections to the municipal water supply (pipes buried too shallow). Then the snow comes back, it stays ultra cold for a few weeks, then we get another temperature spike. Overall this winter hasn't really bothered me, but it's obvious that others are ready for spring.

It is a good thing that my well is 176' deep and the water line is buried down 5' with a 2" layer of styrofoam directly over top of it (1" of styrofoam is equal to 1' of dirt, so in theory my water line is covered with 7' of dirt). The cold water comes out of the tap at 40*F.

I'm guessing whoever buried those pipes didn't anticipate a winter like this one.

I think the standard depth for water supply lines in a temperate climate is 18 inches. My well is down 90 feet and last year we had the feed freeze up where it comes into the house. Easily thawed with a drop light.
It's been much colder this year and it hasn't frozen once. I guess I got enough insulation in there to prevent it from freezing again. That or the water is cleaner.
