USS ASPRO on patrol, March 1944. While approaching the northern end of the Straits Of Makassar, the radar op. picked up a 3-ship TF heading NNE. Closed to 6750 yards, and tracked them, moving in fast. Managed to get into a parallel course and matched their speed of 19.5 kts. Thought, what the heck. Not more than 4 fish though- id'ed the targets as two Takao Class CA's, with a DD in the rear. Fired four, and headed away from the target, expecting to miss. About 5 min. later, 3 of the fish struck home, followed by lots of nice secondary explosions. At just over 8000 yds when she was hit makes this my longest-range kill yet.

Default Task Force engaged and beat up

I accidently placed this in the general forum. Enjoy and comment if you liked it.

Sooo, not long after my post about where to find me some ships (Maps anyone?), I was traveling west from Midway towards a patrol area southeast of Palau. I was northeast of the Solomons when I received flash traffic to head to a location NE of an island called Ontong Java Island, 151 20 East 05 25 South.
I thought I had a slight snowball's chance in hell of intercepting them. I plotted a rough course the TF migth take from Truk and started patrolling. At first nothing but bad weather, high seas and frsutration. Suddenly, my radar guys found a huge task force. I spooted three carriers, two battleships, three light cruisers, three heavy cruisers, and a hornet's nest of DD's. I set up a parallel course to them and did an end round forward tube attack. On my first engagement I sunk the Shōkakuo. Lucky shot to the starboard bow, followed by a massive explosion. She kept going full speed as she went under, followed by more massive explosions. I set up the two now zig-zagging carriers. I put two torpedoes each in them. They were Hiyo type carriers. One of them sank right there. The other limped off with the group. I shadowed the Task Force for a day through horrible weather. During the shadowing, the last carrier eventually dropped out of the group due to damage. I put a single torp in her and down she went.
I continued to trail the Task Force which after closer inspection, included two Kongo type battleships. I trailed them with six torps left. I set up a very close aft torp attack and shot three torps in the first Kongo. I spaced the hits out, one to the forward magazine, one mid center, and one to the engine room. The engine room torp shot was a keel buster. It put a huge hole directly under the ship. She rolled over quickly and went to the bottom. I went flank speed and full starboard rudder to bring the sub around. I shot four at the other battleship with three hits and down she went. I sneaked off and I am currently heading home. Tonnage is around 143,000 and change. know, I know.. BE MORE AGGRESSIVE!

Here is the precise info:
Task Force attacked on Jan 31st.
Shōkakuo and Hiyo sunk @ 159 40 E 3 05 S
Other Hiyo sunk at 160 58E 4 02 S

Feb 1st
Two Kongos sunk at 162'34 E 3'3 S

Got this shot the other night, going to have to write a report on the whole mess. If you notice it looks like an officer standing up in the raft rather defiantly.
