Someone made an texture pack installer, haven't tried it yet, but looks good.

I'd rather take that update earlier. Last I heard Notch is negotiating on hiring two new artists and a coder "some of you might know". So, hopefully once he gets the business rolling, we get more frequent friday updates.

I do agree we need more Friday updates, but still a super duper Christmas update would be good. Trees would have Christmas lights, skeletons made out of candy canes, things like that.

Not sure about the torch changes, I can see myself dungeoning and not being able to find my way out again. Biomes should be interesting though.

What method of mining is everyone using? I think (from screenshot) that Dowly just dug a huge hole (strip mine? or was that a giant bowl for frosties?), how did that pan out for Ore? Or, were you more interested in cobblestone?

I have developed a branch mine starting at bedrock level (adminantium). Currently it's only 3 levels high ( but each level has a central corridor, with 20 branches each side (40 total), spaced at 3 blocks apart, each at 20 blocks deep. Took some time but the payoff was worth it.

8 x 64 Coal
2 x 64 Diamond
4 x 64 Redstone
3 x 64 Gold
1 x 64 Iron Ore

Not too mention a shed load of Cobblestone, which I'm now using to construct my citadel.

Unfortunately, I can't render my mine as Cartograph doesn't seem to like my added mine system and all the torches.

I mine in 4 long shafts going in all main directions (N,S,E,W) and then connect them and start slicing the big square that they form. Haven't gotten all that far down yet, so can't say how much diamond etc. I can find by doing that, but plenty of coal and iron at these levels.

Ah, pretty much the same theory then.

Except I started at the bottom as I wanted a Diamond Pick. I also offset my levels and spaced them so I don't miss a block. Like this (although it's getting tricky remembering the math :P :

I really need to install a cart system, it's getting tedious carrying my full inventory up and down.

You should see how quickly a diamond pick munches through stone and how long it lasts. Based on my design, a diamond pick will do one mine level, which is about 1900 excavated blocks, that doesn't include mining the ore veins though and collapsing sand.

Edit - What's that big hole/bowl on your map then?

For carts servicing my mine I had done a 5x5 spiral set up so it would fit a staircase (corner block and first block in would be at the same height, then go up a block each time until the next corner). I also put my ladder in the middle of the spiral. You can run powered carts up that pretty easily with one chest cart (more carts and it has the tendency to get stuck). You can also just fill one cart up, send it to your terminus (put a block at the end of the track), then do more mining, and send another after it. It will not be able to push you up the shaft though (hence the ladder). For that to work, you need a 1/4 incline roughly (1 up per 4 blocks along).

I also ended up elevating the track outside 5 levels up (or digging it out to 5 squares away), to make sure critters and mobs never spawned on the track or blocked it in any way.

There are some pictures of it on the second or third page if you want to see it

My mine was setup like this

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
x
x
x
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
x

etc, about 5 levels above the bedrock to avoid all the lava, with the tunnels running a couple hundred blocks (30 torches long that just barely lit up the place). I found lots of caves too but those are dangerous places often packed with mobs (I once encountered about 5 skeletons, 3 spiders, 7 zombies, and 4 of those exploding numbats, all in one medium pit area).

I would do this as long as I wanted, then move up 3 levels and start again.

New world with update?

Current one will be saved and stored safely. Always available if desired, think you can plug it in to SP as well, if you miss it too much.
