On a totally nonvisual, but completely cat-related note:

Neighbors (renters) in the house next door moved out about three weeks ago. Good folks, all around. Young single mom trying to make a good run of it, but still a young'un in a lot of ways. Since they've moved, that end unit in our row of townhouses is empty.

In the three weeks since they've moved out, we've had an earthquake, a brush-by from a hurricane, and over the last three days, steady, soaking, sometimes heavy rain. Truly miserable.

Last night, when Mrs. Growler steps out on the deck to take a bag of trash out, she hears over the rainfall this pathetic crying sound from the deck of the now-empty house next door. Turning on the deck light, she sees the neighbor's black and white shorthair, soaked to the skin and plaintively calling her people to let her in out of the rain.

So my wife lays a plank across the gap between the neighbors' place and ours, and coaxs the half-drowned cat over to our deck with a dish of cat food, which the cat just devours. Then the lady builds a little cat-fort in the lee-side corner of the deck, sheltered by the house, for the cat to stay in, since her daughter's cats (of which there are two in number, but six in size) were already hissing through the door at all of this going on outside. Another dish of food, and one of water, and we close the door and the curtain so the other cats don't pester the guest.

Wake up this morning at 0500 for work, and the first thing she does? Goes to check on the cat - who was at that time, asleep in the cat-fort.

So, the Missus is going to try to reach the owners of the place next door, to see if they can contact the previous renters, to get their cat back to them... three weeks after they shoved off.

I don't know if the cat was with them and came back to the house, or if they had to leave the cat... either way, given the events of the last three weeks, that's one survivor-type cat.
