Nah. They did discuss it...that's what Sky news probably latched on to, but tonight they'll be using the numbers game...whether that'll work or not, who knows? TBH I don't think even calling the army in will work, this will end when they either run out of things to loot or it starts raining.

The President of the Association of Chief Police Officers on BBC News now makes a good point, water cannons and baton rounds are blunt weapons for use against static crowds...these are not static crowds. He was quite scathing of those making those 'uninformed comments about bringing in water cannons and baton rounds'.

There is no way the Army would be deployed to curb the unrest! They don't have the training or experience of doing so (over 20 years ago does not give experience to todays intakes). They'd be unarmed, or worse - armed without ammunition (bin lids and sticks) which always raised a chuckle during briefings/training. Whilst in many other countries that would be the method used we would be hypocritical to do so - Syria, Bahrain, Libya, Egypt... all recent, all decried for their use of the military. Britishness dictates the military don't take to the streets against rampaging thugs. This is not the same as sectarian violence of NI.

(Edit: If however rioting starts in Wooton Bassett I'm sure every uniformed bloke throughout the land would gladly oppose!)

Talking of which, the only British water-cannons are in NI and it's marching season. And there's only six. So that's a no-no, but my preferred option (after parents keeping their kids in!).

On a lighter note, massive TVs looted from Currys, beer looted from the supermarkets, and tomorrows football match cancelled. What they going to watch now?

I woulldnt rule it out just yet, tonight could get VERY ugly, and I really hope it doesnt kick off here in Sheffield,we had a few protests down near the Town Hall a few months back, something that hasnt been seen for quite a while.
The latest comments by a chief inspector regarding tonight's possible tactics are:

- the use of plastic bullets
- the use of baton rounds
- the use of columns of armoured police vehicles to 'seal off' vulnerable streets.

In a way i'm intrigued at the prospects of tonight's anticipated events,we are not accustomed to things on this scale here in England, maybe in the old days but certainly not in this age.

Hi Tony,

How about deploying units of SAS counter terrorist units (initially using only non lethal rounds),after all,the capital and other major cities are virtually under siege.THEY certainly are trained in these sorts of emergencies

It did give me a laugh round Oakhanger and Bordon(what a dump) when they was out in army riot gear, shields and pick axe handles while out looking for suspicious bombs in the bins.

There is only the Apprentices and Blacks coming up, the only trouble this year has been the few bits in Belfast on the peace line and some tiny stuff after portadown.....unless of course the OIRA/PIRA/CIRA start beating each other up over who is really the republican at the internment march. But that is normally one group stands up and does their nonsense then the other gets up and does the same nonsense then the other ....,.
