That's not a mod option. It's a standard Vanilla game setting. The mod removes the periscope's ability to determine the ship's type just by looking at it if you select generic ship names. Instead of a T2 it's a Tanker.

Some of Youse Bums are more 'experienced' than I thought...

By the way, I have a decent collection of 45's and recent collections of stuff from the early 50's.. which I put on CD's. 'Happy Times'...at least a whole lot less complicated, right ? Hey! 20 cent a gallon gas and Chevvy Six's with split manifolds. Twin Racoon tails and High Compression Hub Caps...

I have "Auto Ship Recognition" disabled, but "Weapons Officer Assistance" is enabled. If I ask the WO for the ID, the 'auto ship finder' then works.

FWIW, in the stock game, you can manually ID ships, even with the higher realism settings.

Click on the checkbox (the empty white box) in the recognition manual for the ship that you'd like to identify and its name will appear on the notepad (as the ship-type whose page you were viewing). Then you can later click on the word "ship" on the notepad to jump to the appropriate page in the recognition manual (which might be helpful if you'd since changed pages). This let's you keep track of ship types in a convoy, for example, when you might want to ID several ships and then come back to them for targetting.
