If you're going to take the deck gun out to put more AA in it's place, then that's your prerogative... you can do as you wish.

If, on the other hand, you're taking your deck gun off in the hopes of streamlining your boat into beaing more quiet or traveling faster underwater or some other briliant and subtle plan, then forget it... the game doesn't appear to model any of that stuff.

Shooting below the waterline at close ranges is very easy if you do it manualy, you just have to do it without zooming in at all.... if you do zoom in, then you get the "can't fire closer then 500m deal" which is wack (even then you could still do it if you time your shot with the guns up and down motion in the waves, but it's more dificult than just unzooming).

There is a mod that has been done that does mod the removal of the gun. It's in the mod section of the forum under the list of mods sticky.

I keep the deck gun till the end of 1943, but then it's flak all the way!!!

I've took out the guns on a warship and merchants and contrary to popular opinion here, it's not easy especially in the dead of night and the warship is catching up with you; this is why I keep my deck gun.. after 4 hours real time of being depth charged by this Flower Corvette, Batteries down to 10% and no torpedoes. I HAD to surface so just imagine the scenario without a deck gun ?.. you surface then say to your Men, 'oh dear, what a pickle we're in' before being blown to Kingdom come !
