The GWX Real Life U-boat Behavior Mod- by Kpt. Lehmann modded based on R&D information provided by Cdre Gibs.
This mod causes your U-boat to react more accurately to its environment and reflects the fragile nature of "trim" in comparison to hydrodynamics. Creating this mod led to a whole series of very cool discoveries and situations in testing. U-boats were never usually set for neutral buoyancy anyway... Trim was set to be slightly positive. This was generally done with safety in mind. In GWX the "All stop" command will bring the U-boat up a few meters to a point where NEUTRAL bouyancy is achieved... not necessarily to the surface. This accurately simulates a U-boat's trim for positive bouyancy. As you travel and set your depth... the boat will generally settle at roughly one meter less than you set... (If you are travelling at 1.5-2 knots.) Periscope depth is a little more more tricky now. At shallow depths speed below 2 knots increases the risk of breaching the surface. Additionally there is now greater pitch and roll on the surface. This mod also implements and represents wave action/friction much more realistically. Heavy seas impede forward motion and cost fuel. You will be able to watch your knot-meter for proof... you can see it change slightly as waves crash against your bow. In storms, forward motion will be somewhat impeded... costing you fuel as you attempt to compensate by pushing your diesels harder. A better feeling of mass is now present... Acceleration takes more time. In the higher speed ranges coming up to desired speed takes a little longer. Directional changes cost speed (as usual... but a touch more so now) Fragility of trim- (See all statements on positive bouancy) Being depth charged upset the boat more which the U-boat Captain must actively manage... takes more time to recover control/trim of boat after close detonations... I was BLASTED TO THE SURFACE (as I have read in real life accounts over and over) more than once. DC's detonating above you may force you down a bit more than before. You will need to use an occasional burst of power to control the boat occasionally during close DC attacks. This naturally makes noise and with this one element alone, enemy sensors have become more effective in a passive way. (As previously mentioned... GWX sensors are being overhauled) Flooding adds mass to your U-boat fast... will affect the trim of the boat and must be reacted to with all possible haste! Remember trim is fragile. I'm sure you can guess what happens when your boat begins taking on water... Again you will have to make noise to stop the flooding... and increase power to maintain depth. We spent good deal of time testing this aspect of GWX and I believe most users are going to be rather happy with what we've done here. Sink them all mates! ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Kpt. The difference between GW 1.0 and GWX is like comparing night and day. We aren't going to send her out to sea though until she is ready, no matter how tempted we may be. Releasing GW 1.0 threw open the doors for like-minded people who aren't afraid to think BIG and do a little hard work. This translates into TIME... and only naturally so... and is why we don't discuss release dates. We are attacking our own work from every direction and trying to break it as we go... This process also takes time and is required if we intend to meet what is expected of us. Everything must be first balanced with everything else. LOL, throw all the rotten fruit and veggies at us you like... In the end we'll throw them back!!! ![]() |

Cool was wondering when someone would releate to subs losing and gaining depth,as they reecive depth charges.Will the be any modifications as to being detected on the surface,it is much too easy to be seen at night by escorts(weakest part of game to me)...just one more questioned.

TGW was the single best improvement to the game and it sounds like GWX will take that further ahead perhaps an even bigger leap.
The above sounds so very cool and addresses some things I have been unable to figure and now can stop thinking about. One point was made about it being too real for some players. While I am anxious for such an update is there a way to allow for less realism fanatics to get most of GWX without that intensity? Say no and I personally don’t care give me reality to the enth degree but just a thought! BTW, don’t wait too long. It might be not in our interest for it to come out near SH4 and be so good we don’t want to transfer to the USN.:rotfl: Wulfmann

Now that sort of realism isnt everybodies fun but believe me it is playable As this is supposed to be a sim as well as a game there are compromises But having said that this is not intended to ba a shoot em up and no one is forcing anybody to use anything they are not comfortable with The GW team cant be expected to provide individual instals for players who dont like some bits but like others Give it a try before deciding - if you dont like it well go back to your previous game Personally I love it and I only started playing the game as a sink em all shooter but as time goes by you need more |
