Generally, you have a point. If you don't understand others don't expect to be understood.

BUT in context of this thread, what happened at UBI is totally different, you should read the posts there before commenting Immacolata. Basically that's a guy who is a troublemaker and hooked onto to the Nazi thing when he could'nt find anything else to annoy people with.

Idolatry of one national icon is as bad as another IMHO. The flag didn't commit any atrocities, only some pig headed people who served it.

I guess all I am trying to say is, that it doesn't bother me any more than any other flag in a game.

By the way, considering the swastika (crux gammata - if I recall correctly) is one of many variations of the "Christian" symbol (cross), anybody done any research into it's "heritage". I vaguely remember seeing it in ancient chinese artifacts, so perhaps it's history goes way back?

Hi and welcome aboard
Yes you are correct the swastica in different forms is an ancient symbol
Its the nazi version people object to
Its history and you cant rewrite it
Used in its correct enviroment - such as the flag and medals - is no problem in my eyes whatsoever
After all this is a ww2 subsim we are playing - as submariners as part of the nazi run armed forces

Immacolata: I do believe there is a huge difference between displaying an historically correct flag in one's signature in a WWII submarine simulation forum and marching down Trafalgar square waving the Reich's colours...

I wouldn't condone idolatry of course. The question remains: when is displaying such an item equal to idolizing it?

Don't forget that just about any flag "idolizes" something terrible: one could percieve the Dutch flag to symbolize colonialism in Southeast-Asia, the American flag to symbolize "Dollar imperialism", the Spanish flag could be tied to the oppressive rule of the Spanish Main and so on and on. Displaying any of these flags would then automatically become idolizing those crimes? I have to disagree.

Kind regards,

Eichenlaub

Default Flag & swastica

Einchenlaub: Hear hear!!

For crying out loud, its just a flag. The swastica is just some lines thats crossing each other.. I play SHIII with the flags and the swastica, and i have never hatet jews or other humans! The forums should allow symbols that are relevant to games, and i find it weird that ubi is so critical to this matter. Hey, they made a game where you exclusively sail around and promote the third reichs sinking of allied vessels! If we stop using those symbols, the next generation of people will forget the horror Hitler brought to the world... I guess everybody who is using the flag/swastica is aware of its darker side of history, and only sees this like a "game-issue" and not as some neo-nazi crap.

Actually, Swastika is formed by four 'L' letters. Not sure about the Nazi swastika, but the real swastika´s 'L'´s are Life, Light, Love and Luck.

Heck, there´s even a building that looks like swastika in San Diego!

Dowley,

Don't spread that one to far, or it'll have to be torn down so it doesn't hurt anybody's feelings flying over it.

Just don't paint it black, and give it white circular grounds...........

Thanks Seth.

I believe there was a copse of trees in some German forest that was sown in a swastica-shape by the nazis. A few years ago, it caused an uproar in Germany, since the trees were fully grown and stood out better than ever from the surrounding trees (of different kinds). I'm not too sure but I believe they've been cut down...

Politically correctness can be soooo bad.

Kind regards,

I was a moderator at Ubi but lost that for standing by people that had issues with their games. Then was permanently banned by a so called "friend" who's a moderator for expressing my views on another forum totally separate from Ubi. There is no freedom of speech UBi says on their forums, and the same goes for any forum that they look at where a Ubi member speaks their mind. They control whats said and written. Their CMs and moderators are worse than Orwell's "1984".

I now no longer peruse the Ubi forums, nor do I buy their products. And I've found there are more doing the same as I. Ubi will be their own downfall in the furture if they continue as they are....... that includes forums and use of invasive copy protection.

What gets me is the double standards used by Ubi.

you bet that waving the american flag in certain parts of the world will land you in trouble relatively fast. Or danish for that matter And yes, waving the particular flag in a Subsim forum can't REALLY offend me either, and if the board mods are fine with it, then lets just move on. But when people get banned from a forum - this or other, for that matter - for carrying such symbol in their sig, I say don't come crying because it is pretty controversial for starters. Show attitude, expect some lip.
