The key is to practice in the training missions as much as possible until you are comfortable with the game, after that go out and have a blast in the North Atlantic!
lol, i tried to have a blast just outside Germany, i found myself chasing ships that i spotted way too late..of course they got away..i felt like like a 80 year old in a wheelchair :rotfl:
so i think career mode can wait for awhile:p

Do the torpedo training mission in the Naval Academy and just practice. The only hard part of high realism in this game is the manual targeting. Just practice practice. Thats what I'm doing. I'm tired of firing my torpedoes as if Mr. Worf were waiting at tactical.

Become Mr. Worf!

I was actually pretty worried, i tried the first mission nd felt terribly stupid. I was supposed to find a canal, but since i didnt understand the direction info( )..well, i felt like i had failed before i even got started
I cant remember havin any problems getting into the SH1 gameplay:hmm:
but i guess the years have erased the bad ones:p can only remember some superb torpedo hits

thnx again, now i can start the game again

somebody said leva the weapon officer assistance and then set every other realism option. Almost right: Dont forget to NOT check "No map updates"

Then you can see the ships plotted on the map and this is a great help for manual TDC (which you really should try - I never used auto TDC)

Did you take a look here?:
http://www.paulwasserman.net/SHIII/
Its an eye opener (at least it was for me)

Then when you have made yourself familiar with all this options go and try one of the big mods - either GW or NYGM or even better both. By then you will know what you want. It is really a question of personal preference.

yes Wazoo's tutorials are essential for Manual TDC. Also this is very helpful: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=88961

No don't worry about screwing up. You get used to it pretty quick. I had used auto TDC for a while but then I decided to school myself and on the first try I missed so badly I wanted to cry. But on my 2nd attempt I got all the data right and hit a C2 with a 4 torp salvo. Might seem overkill but I didn't want to miss and when all four torps hit the ship didnt go down! I had to put a 5th in her and even then it took a while to list into the ocean. Lots of practice. Practice!

Also to begin with I pause at every step. Get fluid with it and then you're off to the races.

also not checking "No Map Updates" doesnt subtract from realism, infact if you set to "Realistic" it stays unchecked, personaly I play at 40-50% realism, it fits me well, frankly weapon soulutions is my weapon officers job, Im the the one making sure we get out alive
