If you listen yourself to the original 'Torpedo tube opening.wav' sound it's almost 'not there', to get them higher ofcource brings out background sounds as well, & since a lot are edited from movie sounds it's hard to get clean sounds, often they contain a mix of music, breathing etc and hard to get out!
We do what we can, but I am working on something that may be a vast improvement, if it works I will post my find!
di you know, you can use stereo sounds for SHIII! for SFX it isnt a problem (im using some, no problems so far?). the only problem is stereo+ogg (voice). there were several crashes if authors used stereo speech files (as example the DB sound mod).

i know the problem abour background noise very well, pretty hard to get rid of. but usually i dont use movie sounds anymore, except they are clean or dont disturb athmosphere...

looking forward to your find... ah and who is "we..." you dont work alone?

SDL Tests

I must admit that I was working on theogg files most of all that I encountered the problems, will try some stereo again & see what happens.

Edit:What I've been working on: The SDL Mixer file, this is really the key to editing the sound files in SH3, basically it's a set of rules to play the sound files. It doesn't really matter what the volume is (even gain at 1db) the sound is limited by the SH3.sdl mixer file. I used a Hex editor & did some testing (adjustments) to the file with the result that I thought! In the game pressing Q opens the torpedo door, Firing a torpedo opens the torpedo door + fires the torpedo, I can understand now why the Open torpedo door sound is dead quiet! Please do this test, download the SH3.sdl file here:
http://rapidshare.de/files/21577417/SDL_Test.rar.html
backup yours, copy this test version to data\Sound folder run SH3 go to naval academy select torpedo training and use q to open door & then fire torpedo, you will notice the sound volume is great for the Torpedo tube opening.wav now but when you press fire the same sound is used followed by Torpedo_Tubes.wav !!
I tried to find a good wave editor that has SDL mixer built in but no go for windows, the only one I could find is Sweep for unix/linux based systems. (excellent freeware program). Will keep searching for a windows based editor/mixer, I anyone comes accross one please let me or NippleSpanner know.
Thanks.
