Once you get a far as the narrows, it's wide open.

I've been to New York once. It was 1942 sometime. I had my trusty Type IXC. It was overcast, rainy, and heavy fog. I even ran into Lady Liberty.

I noticed that you were under attack in the harbour - what did you sink? Deck gun? What's in there in terms of shipping? Are there any naval gun emplacements ashore?

No gun emplacements that I could find. The gun action was towards a stationary T3 (at anchor?). I ran into a Clemson to stbd as I cleared the narrows and entered the harbor. It was also stationary and was therefore dead meat. Outside of that I found a C2, T2 and several small ones. All the headaches are outside in the sound. 4 warships looking all over for you. Just creep along till you hit deep water. :|\

Meh, if your just starting out in SH3, don't listen to him. I think most everyone used the stealth meter when they first start playing.

Later on though, your expected to take off the training wheels.

Its in the realism options when you first start a patrol or single mission.

"No stealth meter" or something like that.

Once you start a patrol your kinda stuck with your settings for the duration of the patrol. So choose wisely before starting.

After that the next thing to ween yourself off of is automatic TDC calculations. if your using it. It has nasty side effect of giving you highly unrealistic tonnage. Aka "the silver bullet effect" Since with autoTDC you can individually target certain compartments when under 1000 meters range (engine, fuel bunker,) and take out a ship with one torpedo, 99.9% of the time. (Imagine an IXD2 or XXI with auto TDC doing this.. essh).

With manual TDC you can't do that, so you'll use more torpedo's. Anywhere betwen 2 to 3 torpedos per ship excepting the smaller 2000 tonners. Those are 1 fish shots.

After that would be the Weapons officer assistance. I still use him honestly. Ill make my calc's first, then if im not feeling good about it, have him double check me.

I think the final kick in the pants would be taking off the map contact updates option. (game displays sonar contacts on the map as the lines and such that you see, which you've been probably using for plotting)

i dont think i could ever force myself to take this option off honestly.. In this regard i am a wuss

One big kink is the external camera. This gives you WAAYY too much info. But turning it off deprives you of those glamour shots of your boat. I recently edited mine a bit so i can only look directly around my boat in free cam, and not jump round from ship to ship looking at whats going on. that way i can look at my boats exterior, but not "cheat" and look at that merchant 4000 meters away while submerged and see what my torpedo's did to him and if hes stopping or still underway.... that sort of t hing.

Can you tell me what files you edited for the camera, i always have the camera enable as probably like every commanders reason i like viewing the sub, but dont like the cheating bit in it, Im usually good and dont click to view other ships and have torpedo view off. But editing what your done would be more disciplined

I dont have it infront of me.

I think its commands_eng.CFG or something like that. Its the file that contains all the hot key assignments.

What i did was remark out (use semicolon) , i think its commands 51 or 52. there about.

its the "<" and ">".

Further up towards the begining of the file i remarked out F12.

In action it totally disable half of the freecam functionatliy. Without the < or > keys you cant toggle views at all. The F12 being gone, makes it a bit harder for me to look on the surface without using a periscope. I have to dileberatly use the slide menu to do that. F12 is just too quick and easy.
