I've seen a few cruisers in convoys, and one task force while off Ireland on my way to the Atlantic. I managed to put two or three into the carrier, and it showed up as sunk on the map, partially due to the heavy weather. I didn't get credit for it though.
Maybe it was neutral. :rotfl: |

Did anyone know that the Italians had an aircraft carrier? They converted the passinger ship Roma, but it wasn't finnished before Italy was knocked out of the war.

Even if Germany or Italy had completed their carriers, they lacked suitable aircraft to operate from them. The JU87 Stuka might have converted ok, but they lacked a fighter that would have stood up to carrier operations. The BF109's landing gear was too narrow to provide stability on a moving deck.

![]() Also, many people do not know that the Italians converted a second liner into the carrier Sparviero. She would have been similar to the HMS Argus in appearance. She was never completed and suffered the same fate as the Aquila. http://warships.web4u.cz/tridy.php?l...tat=ITA&typ=CV |

That did convert the Bf 109's for carrier ops. The T version was built in two mods, T-O with catapult and arrestor gear and T1 with gear removed - it was used for training. They weren't used on carriers (of couse!) but were used in Norway as interceptors.
The Italians were planning a similar thing with one of there fighters (Ra 202?, I know the 202 is correct but not sure on the correct letter abrevation) but never went ahead with it. |

Yeah, but would they have stood up to carrier ops?
Look at the Seafire, in the air it was all but unbeatable but it was plagued with deck accidents which were mostly due to its weak and narrow undercarriage (which had been beefed up from the original Spitfire's). Several sources quote 20 lost in deck accidents for every single aircraft lost to enemy action. For sustained carrier ops an aircraft had to trade off a little perfomance in return for strong, and wide, landing gear, like the Hellcat. Off hand, I cannot think of any aircraft that was originally designed for land use becoming a totally successful carrier aircraft, can you? |

In order to "raise" the possibilities of locating carriers, BBs, cruisers etc., I would suggest that you install SH3 Gen. Check the thread in the mods section.
I couldn't imagine the game without it. |

Took the tip of installing sh3gen and ran of first map update-my patrol grid was nowhere near scapa flow but it said the ark royal and 2 armed merchant cruisers ? possibly so i though oh what the heck and negotiated my way into scapa only to find 1 fiji well i sunk that and as would happen comp froze so rebooted and ran sh3gen again from same save point - again gave me same ships in scapa plus the fiji - lol - think i will stick to my patrol grid this time but will carry on some more with it and see how i get on in future

It was the first large warship I've encountered in 24 patrols. What really amazed me was that I was able to get away unmolested.
