I've heard much discussion about a two-tiered health system and I do believe that it would be to Canada's advantage as the current system is not working very well (to put it mildly). However, I do have concerns that the entire health care system could become privatized and that would be even worse. we need a balance, but I think it can be done.

About same-sex marriage and abortion - those would be the most contentious points for the new Conservative government (I do NOT want to turn this into a religious debate though as that will lead nowhere). Although Stephen Harper has said he will not touch abortion and will hold only a free vote on the marriage definition I have the feeling he is willing to take further steps (IE, the notwithstanding clause). He probably doesn't have the support from other parties which he would need and it could create problems. He will probably wait a while before making a move though.

At least we will have some military improvements and stricter laws (especially related to gun crimes) - both of which I would welcome. Although Canada isn't and never will be renowned for its military power we shouldn't let our military fall into complete disrepair. I just hope the new supply ships, transport aircraft, and icebreakers the Conservatives will purchase will not turn out to be complete junk like those Victorias. (BTW - does anyone know if the plans to buy two assault carriers are still one the table?)

And I am really happy about the lack of Green Party and Bloc seats - neither of these parties (or any of the smaller fringe parties of which there are many) have any realistic or reasonable ideas for the country.

I did vote Liberal though - Stephen Harper has too much disdain for Atlantic Canadians (of which I am one) for my taste. I just do not like him at all, and doubt he will turn out to be a popular Prime Minister. I do not want to start a flame war though, although it is the Canadian election so no one will care enough anyway. :rotfl:

Don't confuse Canada's Liberals with American liberals :hmm:

Canada's Liberal party is, in general terms, just a millimeter right of centre. The only substantial "left" in Canada is the NDP (New Democrats), which are just a millimeter left of centre.
.
Yeah but your center is a mile to our left :P

The way I see it is that the people are to afraid and concerned when they hear private health care up here in Canada. Sure we can see the amount of money the Americans are spending when they have to go to the hospital, but that scenario will never happen in Canada.

One of Canada's firmest beliefs is public health care. I am arm over leg with this idea, who isn't? The problem with public health care is you have to pump so much taxpayer's money into it to get it running. Then problems like over crowding come in and where people waiting months, or even years, to get the surgeries they desperately need but then they are rushed out to open up space.

I believe in a two-tier system, where there is public health care working with private health care. Oh, but the arguments of private health care clients get better treatment then public clients or morale issues concerning people paying for treatment. I say "bah" to those arguments. It works, look at Europe.

But the damnist thing I've heard on CBC, is that Paul Martin and Jack Layton, the defenders of public health care, used private clinics. Oh Canada, why must you take them seriously?

I want to see that gun registry finally removed. That was one of the worst ideas made. It sounds promising, don't get me wrong, but it only hurts the people who obey the law! The criminals will get their guns, no matter what new law comes into play. It has major cost over runs that in turn hurt all taxpayers in Canada (Writing this down made me think of Starforce ... damnit, not the time or place... back to topic :P ).

I am happy that the Conservatives won. Even though I am not allowed to vote, because of age and no Canadian citizenship, doesn't mean I can't complain. Hell, I'll be paying taxes in two years and I want to see my money going into something that works, not to fraudulent politicians or companies that don't deserve it.

Prime Minister Steven Harper, do us proud and jail the scandalise dogs in government, clean up crime, remove the gun registry, and fix the damn public health care!
