Ah, I guess that makes sense.

Kind of odd to put up something that big for ESM, no? Seems like it would be rather detectable. (or I'm living in the past with subs again)

It's a shame I can't find DW in my local stores yet. I'd get to know this boat closer sometime
It probably had Radar Absorbent Materials on it, and the mast wouldn't be up for very long unless they were doing ELINT operations. Also the Periscope has a built in ESM system so the ESM/Radar mast wouldn't necessarily be the 1st choice in certain situations.

Radar absorbent material on a radar mast seems unlikely. Your own radar signal has to to through, after all. Radar antenna's aren't easy to hide from other radars anyway, but if you're going to radiate yourself that doesn't matter much - everyone will know you're there anyway. If you're not planning to use radar, then the ESM on the periscope would do the trick.
