As to such things happening in RL... poo poo happens, we all know the unbelievable luck stories from the Atlantic and Pacific fronts. As to keeping at speed 7 after being attacked, there is certainly room for improvement here

I found quite a few of those task forces doing 7 knots and never found a capital ship there what I found was about 6 DDs escorting merchants.
I did once find a carrier TF in AM52 heading NNE once
