In SH3, however, where the combat is ship vs. sub at close range, i.e. depth-charge attacks, the 3D view actually adds more than simple eye-candy. When all you can see is the inside of your boat as it gets tossed around and the lights are going on and off and pipes start bursting, it enhances the gameplay experience a great deal. In my opinion, modern subsims wouldn't have much opportunity to use those type of effects, at least not realistically.

(Besides, when in combat in DW, you really shouldn't have time to look around the control room anyway )

But, because there are those who really would like a more "immersive" experience while playing DW, I offer a few suggestions:

1) Paint your office, bedroom, or wherever your computer is, completely grey and decorate with various mock-ups of panels and displays and such.

2) Attach your chair to a sturdy base with a small hydraulic power-pack and two or four cylinders to simulate your boat's movement.

3) Have a friend or neighbor stand by to shake your chair when you take damage, or in the event you're destroyed, have them throw a bucket of water at you as fast as possible.

These are just a few ways to improve your experience, hopefully this helps.
:P I really had fun with your suggestions, thanks for your posting, mate!!

Besides, yes you`re right when it comes to combate situations.. but in reality you are not always in combat, are you?

Good point, but I would argue that while you're not always actually fighting in DW, you're still looking for the fight. That is to say you're always kept busy by sonar, TMA, etc. There isn't a heck of a lot of straight sailing time where you don't have anything to do, like in Silent Hunter 3. Having said that, there are times I still wouldn't mind being able to look around the control room and click on, or "walk" to the station I want, rather than using hotkeys alone.

If the "sim" value isn't compromised, eye-candy is never a bad thing to have.

Default 2D for Interior / 3D for Exterior

I actually am hoping to build an interior room for my computer network so I can host a LAN game with people all manning stations for one ship.

So I vote for 2D interior graphics like we have. Maybe some newer looking interfaces, but I'd rather keep the 3D for exterior shots.

Just my take!

3D for SH3
2D for DW!

This tread made me think about it, and I got really impressed with the kind of experience DW would turn if it was in 3d. take a look at SHIII:, those explosions, the water, the crew around you. even if it would be a little more boring (because modern subs usually don't face close combats, and depth charges to shake its hull), I would really like it.

I like the way DW, is now, but I think that 3d would add a new world to the development of modern sub games.
