The Vorbis tools:

Thanks for the link Gizzmoe Have you used these tools, I can't find any documentation for them and when I launch them all I get is a brief flash of a dos type window which disappears immediately

There's also dBpowerAMP, for converting between various audio file types.

Thanks for that TAL, sadly its only a trial and an additional 2MB download. The Vorbis Tools (if I can figure out how to use them) are tiny and free so I'd have no problem including them with the Mod.

Why do you have to include them with the mod?

Just convert your mod from wav to ogg format and distribute the ogg!

These are command-line tools, the documentation is more or less built-in (-h command option). Avon has given a link to a good program, you can use that to convert the Wav files to Ogg. As you don´t want to use the MP3 encoder it is also totally free. Set Frequency to "As Source", "Bit Rate" to 112 or 128 and Encoding to "Variable Bitrate".

Later they can be recoded to Wav with the tiny oggdec.exe.

Thanks again Gizzmoe, I have got software which will convert the files to ogg format (I use Soundforge) however I have no experience of using Command-line utilities so don't know how to run them and if I am to include these utilities with the mod I'd need to provide an explaination to those who would need to convert the files back to wav's

Open Notepad, add these six lines and save it as recode.bat

oggdec data\sound\amb_submarineinterior.ogg
oggdec data\sound\submarine_electric_exterior.ogg
oggdec "data\Sound\Dive sequence.ogg"
del data\sound\amb_submarineinterior.ogg
del data\sound\submarine_electric_exterior.ogg
del "data\Sound\dive sequence.ogg"

Place it into the "SHIII Internal Life Mod v1.2" dir together with oggdec.exe. Also make sure that you have the three Ogg files in data\sound.

So you now have two dirs and two files under "SHIII Internal Life Mod v1.2".

[data] dir
[documentation] dir
oggdec.exe
recode.bat

Execute recode.bat, it converts the Ogg´s and deletes them after that. Try it out, it should work on your system.

The mod is a wav file which replaces the amb_submarineinterior.wav in the sound folder so I would only be converting to ogg to reduce the download size for 56k modem users they would have to convert the ogg back to wav in order for the mod to work.

Oh, then don't bother with the OGG. If there's no way that SH3 can be easily reconfiged to play a different file, then just stick to the WAV.

You´ve missed the point, Avon! It will include a program which converts the Ogg´s back to Wav. This solution makes the archive at least three times smaller.

I just ran a test and it works a treat converting a 35Mb Wav into a 4Mb ogg and back again. Thats the answer Gizzmoe, thanks mate

Salute! KptnLt. Karle!

Great stuff man! Keep goin'

I have to echo The Avon Lady though. Regarding ease of use IMHO keeping with original file type (MP3) would be best.

Super stuff though.

The original ones are Wav, not MP3. All you need to do is to double-click a batch file and wait a few seconds, so it´s very easy to use.

I agree it is very simple and automatic and the filesize savings are enormous - having said that I have yet to check if the compression ogg uses is completely reversed when you convert back to wav
