Poor relations between France and Germany are slowing down key decisions in the EU including deals on defence in Ukraine and trade, an influential German MEP has claimed.

David McAllister, chair of the European parliament’s foreign affairs committee and a key figure in the opposition Christian Democrats party, says he is concerned that the lack of contact between the chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and the French president, Emmanuel Macron, is causing delays on key decisions on battle tanks and fighter jets, and a future trade deal with Latin America.

“At the moment we’re seeing a remarkable lack of internal coordination between Paris and Berlin. And that is not good,” said McAllister.

He said the Franco-German relationship, long considered the driving force of the EU, was not “everything in Europe” but that without cooperation between the two countries “things don’t work”.

“In the end, Paris and Berlin need to agree to smooth things … and this is where I criticise the German government. I don’t think we have seen such little cooperation between Paris and Berlin as we are witnessing at the moment,” he added.

Somehow funny to see what the EU is being accused of, while single nations "around the EU" are doing exactly the same. I fail to see a good strategy.

France and Germany eh?. I laughed a bit when I read that thinking about the coups happening in Africa where French diplomats and soldiers are told to leave or else. Of course it gets blamed on Russia. But Germany and the U.S. still have a diplomatic and troop presence in those African states. I imagine there’s lots of mining rights and contracts to be signed, just need to get rid of the competition.

Honestly said the German simply have not figurd out how to get their troops out now that all previously planned escape options have been blocked by events. I would rate any French troops operation is way more combat-efficient than the German ones.

Its Baerbock's divine ego only that has led to decisions leaving the Germans in the game although it already has been blown off. The French simply were more realostc when they alraedy have left.

Dont forget they get part o their atomic fuel from Niger. I think thats an argument why they have not left mindlessly.

Do not forget France and Germany still buy atomic fuel from Russia, right now.
Not that I understand it.

The European Union is planning to release billions of currently frozen euros in EU funds to Hungary.

Around €22billion (£19billion) in funds have been frozen since last December due to law concerns, but if relaxed, will increase Budapest’s budget significantly.

The money was frozen after it was decided that Hungary was not complying with rules protecting human rights.

Thawing the funds would mark a victory forPrime Minister Viktor Orban, who swore he would not agree to any increase in the EU budget until Hungary was able to access it again.

The EU is hoping that by reversing the freeze, Budapest will approve its increased budget to give aid to Ukraine, according to senior officials.

And our own oil companies still seem to do business with Russia too. Senator Menendez inquired as to why but he was suddenly charged with bribery. Since his removal nobody else has continued the inquiry.
