This is a clean stock 1.5 installation done strictly for testing; boat is a Gato, second or third patrol of a career. I had transferred out of PH to Brissie, but even if I'd stayed, Midway is the same distance as Tulagi from the drop zone.
I'm upgrading to FotRSUE once a few projects are completed and I have time to immerse myself (ha) in customizing the game again, so stock will be a thing of the past. Nevertheless it's bizarre to find a career-killer like this lurking there. IIRC, the 50% was around Guam and the crew did warn at 50% and 10%, possibly at 25% too. I was constantly dodging planes then, so I'm not sure. Fuel consumption at Ahead Full (20kts) over that same test course was 27%. |

Ahead Flank should be the 20 knots, Ahead Full might be 17, but Ahead Standard should be around 10-12 knots, and should be close to the most efficient setting. When you start out of Pearl or where ever, run the whole way at 9 or 10 knots, which ever gets you the best mileage, even if you have to use the knot gauge to set the speed. The only time you do Ahead Full or Flank is when you have to in order to catch a potential target, or get out of the way of a bomb drop...

@ Ahead Flank on this test course in a Gato is 21kts and uses 30% of bunkerage.
FWIW, the course is 35 degrees true out of Brissie harbor for 2000km. On the unwinnable patrol, I set the knot gauge to 10 kts in each direction; on the return, it nevertheless often ran at 7-9 kts instead, suggesting at least part of the issue could be wind and current based. On the test course, the knot meter stays firmly on the chosen value. |

?? a difference of only one knot between Ahead Full at 20, and Ahead Flank at 21??... Surely stock isn't that far off...
