Happy Birthday, fireftr18!
  Sorry for being late, may you have good year, and stay safe on the job! We just visited the ruins of the firefighters' "barracks" (more like a palace http://www.ostia-antica.org/regio2/5/5-1.htm) in Ostia/Italy from the third century; fire has always been the greatest threat to people and their homes, and those who fought it were a very prestigious and respected lot of men already back then.

Again, thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes.
 Catfish, I believe Ancient Rome had the first organized fire brigades. The fire halls were huge because of the sheer number of firefighters needed. Those numbers obviously aren't needed now.
