From what I have read this sounds like a "Jean". So far it is the only torpedo bi-plane that I could find that was still in use during the 40's. They are carrier based and you should not see any past 1943.

Thats just happened to me,not quite dark had this target lined up perfectly (manual) flooded the tube an just about t let one off when there was an almighty explosion ,slight damage to the casing,was at periscope depth and stopped ,few secs later saw plane fly over the freighter . No chance after that ,the target started zigzagging ,that was off the coast of Japan.
