The time drift is normal. Your in-game clock is "set" on your base's time zone. So if you start from Pearl by the time you reach to Japan the clock readings and the day/night cycle might seem ... uhm out of sync.

With all weapons settings on realistic, I had only had one dud torpedo, and the rest blew up on impact, and 2 CVs, and a BB sunk, and an assortment of other vessels. But I had to start the patrol over from scratch, since I forgotten the cardinal rule of saving the game periodically while on patrol.
