Libya conflict: Rebels push towards Tripoli

Bouyed by gains on Saturday, rebel forces are pushing towards the Libyan capital, Tripoli, where there was heavy overnight gunfire and several explosions on Sunday morning.

A BBC correspondent with rebels who took Zawiya on Saturday says they have now taken Jaddayim, the first town en route to Tripoli, 40km (25 miles) east.

Earlier, Col Muammar Gaddafi told state TV that the "rats" [rebels] had been eliminated in the capital.

Rebels are moving on two other fronts.

Rebel forces are building on gains made on Saturday.

They took Zlitan, 160km (100 miles) east of Tripoli and also also advancing from the south, while Nato warships control access to the sea.

A rebel official said their supporters had started to rise up in Tripoli, but the violence appeared to peak late on Saturday night and there is still much support for Colonel Gaddafi in the city, correspondents say.

Pro-Gaddafi forces have been fighting back at the oil port of Brega, with the rebels admitting that they had fallen back from the eastern town's industrial zone under heavy bombardment.

Clerics 'call to rise up'

Four loud explosions were heard in Tripoli on Sunday morning following hours of sustained gunfire in the city.

The rebels haven't gone in in force into Tripoli imo. I wish them the best from here.

NATO is holding back now. It seems the West hopes that Gaddafi would exit without much fighting.

I also hope Gaddafi would see reason and not be killed or allow himself to be captured by the rebels.

Not? NATO is on, for other reasons and the rebels have the backing and support!

NATO hasn't been as active as they had been in the past few days/week.

I truly believe that while there may be gains to be made in this conflict, however the risks involved do not justify it unlike what most lay people tend to believe. I truly believe in the good will of the British under David Cameron, France under Sarkozy and Obama(too bad he didn't have the political support for this but he did what he could and it was significant).

Call me naive, call me stupid I do not care. I believe in my own observation and judgment and I can think for myself until convinced otherwise by development.

Sure, they have it, it's just that they have changed their pace, and planning for individuals and key objectives and field operations.

Libya conflict: Fighting in Tripoli as rebels reach city

Bloody battles have been raging in the Libyan capital Tripoli, as reporters travelling with rebels forces say they have reached the city from the west.

Hundreds of rebels have been seen streaming in vehicles towards the city.

An AFP correspondent saw crowds of civilians running alongside rebel vehicles as they drove in at dusk.

Col Muammar Gaddafi has gone on state TV to say he will not abandon Tripoli. His supporters say he has tens of thousands of fighters to defend him.

Near a hotel used by foreign journalists in Tripoli long bursts of automatic fire could be heard on Sunday afternoon.

Rebel forces have advanced from the east and west in recent days, backed by Nato aircraft enforcing a UN resolution to protect civilians.

Critics accuse the alliance of overstepping its mandate by helping the rebels - an allegation it denies.

According to Sky and BBC News today the rebels have entered Tripoli and have the vast majority of it under their control and have also detained two of Gaddafis sons, Muhammad and Saif but their is currently no knowledge of Gaddafis whereabouts.

Not long now me thinks.

Libya conflict: Fighting rages near Gaddafi compound

As rebels in Tripoli celebrated on Monday morning, the BBC's Matthew Price said fighting was still taking place.

Heavy fighting is taking place in Tripoli around the compound of embattled Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi after rebels seized control of much of the city on Sunday.

Throughout the night, jubilant crowds remained in central Green Square, previously the scene of nightly pro-Gaddafi demonstrations.

Rebels met little resistance as they swept in from east, south and west.

A rebel spokesman says pro-Gaddafi forces still control 15-20% of Tripoli.

There is no word of Col Gaddafi's whereabouts, but the rebels claim to have captured his son Saif al-Islam.

Tanks emerged from Col Gaddafi's Bab al-Azizia compound early on Monday morning and began firing, a rebel spokesman said.

Sustained gunfire has been heard in the area.

Western leaders have welcomed the rebel advance and urged Col Gaddafi to go.

China has said it will co-operate with whatever government the Libyan people choose.

-Flags torn down

The BBC's Tripoli correspondent, Rana Jawad, who has been unable to report openly since March, says people in her neighbourhood in eastern Tripoli were woken by the imam at the local mosque singing the national anthem of the pre-Gaddafi monarchy.

There is very much a sense that the end is near and the rebels have achieved what they wanted, our correspondent says.
