Wasn't overly impressed

So Thor decides to come down and visit us mortals on Earth one day but he doesn't let anyone know who he is. He meets a young lass and they end up doing the dirty deed all night long.

The next morning, Thor decides to reveal his identity to the young lady.
He says, "I'm Thor!"
The young lady replies, "You're thor! I'm so thor I can hardly pith!"

Just saw the first showing at our local Megaplex this morning.

Great movie? Of course not.

Good movie? Maybe. Depends on what you like.

Good summer popcorn flick? Oh yeah.

Good genre movie? I'd say if you liked the Iron Man movies you'll like Thor. Well written, good action, good acting, good direction from Kenneth Branagh. I was unfamiliar with Chris Hemsworth, who does a very good job in the title role, starting off as the arrogant jerk who actually deserves his banishment, but learns from the people around him and grows into a hero. Anthony Hopkins is Odin, Rene Russo is Frigga, Thor's mother, Natalie Portman is the love interest/spunky and smart scientest, and Stellan Skarsgård is good as her mentor. Also unfamiliar to me was Tom Hiddleston, who is nicely both sinister and sympathetic as Loki, who, as with any good villain, is really trying to do what he feels is best for all involved.

Special effects are spectacular, but don't distract too much from the story or overpower it, which is as it should be.

All-in-all I didn't think my money was wasted. Had a good time.

And that's really the most important question. If you felt that your money was well spent for the entertainment than it was a good movie.

Me? I am just too frickin cheap to go to the theaters.

Same here, though in my case it's probably more lazy than cheap. But in certain cases I make exceptions.

I'm not talking about the animated version.
I just bought that DVD a month or two ago and I have to agree. Filming in Iceland, using real Nordic people in the cast, a decent plot, it all combined to make a much better movie than that animated piece of mass market crap.

So ... say one enjoyed the first Iron Man but thought the second one to be a little boring and self-indulgent. Would Thor be a decent choice for that person (a non-comic book kinda guy)?

Hard to say, as i liked both. As I guessed before seeing it, it's based deeply in the comic, using Norse mythology as nothing but a springboard. Taken on its own merits, it's fun, not overly deep, ties in with the rest of them, and don't forget to stay until the end of the credits, as like the Iron Man movies it has one last scene at the very very end.
