Default need more information

There are many mods. It depends in part on how skilled you are as a captain. By way of examples, are you playing at full realism with map contacts off? Do you know how to attack use manual targeting? Do you know how to activate mods using JGSME? Do you know how to using the compass tool and plot a target's course? And if you are really nuts, do you want to learn to navigate using the stars? Many questions can be answered using the search feature, as this and many other posts deal cover answers to your question.

For starters, download the 3,000 meter bearing tool. If you do not want to load a supermod, then visit Webster's page and he has lots of individual mod fixes to the vanilla game (i.e. SH4 1.5.) If you do not know how to attack, see the Skipper's Bag of Tricks sticky in this forum. There are lots of turtorials there.

A list of mods can be found in the Mod forum under Neal Steven's sticky. It is not complete, but is a good start. Other mods are listed in the Subsim Download section, a link to which can be found in that sticky or contained in threads in the mod forum.

Welocme aboard, captain.

2 questions, first, is navigation using the sun and stars really tough?? Ive always wanted to do so but kept away because I thought it would be completely to tough. Secondly, Whats the 3000 meter bearing mod?

I've always been in favour of navigating using the ocean itself; memorizing what each patch of ocean looks like and use that as a map

re Celestial Navigation - I haven't been able to figure it out.

re the 3,000 meter bearing tool - its bigger than than the 2,000 meter tool. If you have plot angles, it makes the job easier; same for plotting course. You have to load it to see it. It is a 3,000 meter compass tool. If you know how to load mods, it can be deactivated very simply.

I tried it (in the game, not real life).

IMO, it is not for the faint of heart. It can be done, but absorbs a lot of time and energy, making taking on the IJN almost an afterthought. There is a thread for Celestial Navigation in the forum. It is well worth reading if you want to try it.

Welcome abroad Veteran. Hmmm, something just doesn't fit when looking at your screen name and avatar. Oh well, I'm goin' down is right. There's just too much involved to explain. Especially considering that we have no idea what you're already familiar with. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with diving in head-first (if you're into that sort of thing) but, it might be best to familiarize yourself with the game and this forum. I'd recommend a mod but, I don't know what you like, if you see what I mean.
So, gander about, put your feet up and make yourself at home. I believe that, before long, you won't be needing any recommendations.

Welcome aboard ,
Most SH4 players go with either RFB+RSRDC or TMO+RSRDC. They fix/improve many elements in the game. Very few people stick with vanilla for long. Download JSGME (a mod installer), it will make your life easier, as far as mods are concerned. All these can be found in the downloads section.

I have the mod, but cannot remember exactly where I got it from. It is part of the one of the Environment Mods, like PE4. You download the mod, and open it. You will see subsidiary (like that term?) files. it is one of them.
