If you wish to discuss realism - them 30,000 Allied merchant men died as a direct result of the U boat, these men, as soon as their ship was torpedoed, had their pay stopped, so any survivors were not earning a penny. I could not even consider using a U boat, simulated, or otherwise, against the Atlantic convoys. Also in realistic terms, the U Boat only sank 1% of convoy shipping the whole war.

Correctimundo - I have done too much WW2 research to even consider it. I admired the sailors who dared to go out in those U boats knowing that 75% would never come home.

I'm confused... you wouldn't even consider using a u-boat simulated or otherwise, yet your on subsim?

And I think the majority of us are history buffs, and admire the brave men involved in ww2 on all sides.. using a simulator doesn't mean we are disrespecting those men in anyway..

If that is what you were getting at... because thats how I read it.

I am on subsim yes, and have been for eons. I have no qualms about taking a US boat out to sink Japanese shipping, they were the 'enemy' and their conduct in WW2 amounts to an open invite to sink them, which is why American announced 'unrestricted' warfare against Japan.

It does not mean I am, in this day and age, anti german or anti Japanese, I have some brilliant german friends from when I lived there.

As you rightly suggest, its a simulation - but I draw the line at shooting at 'my own side'.

Depending on your country of origin (I am English) do you find it easy to sink for example, US shipping? Because they made up a goodly proportion of convoys and warships in the Atlantic.

I have no problem with it at all. Just as with a flight sim I love to play any side of any period it's the machinery I like and the history I'm after. Just as I watch movies like Das Boot, Cross of Iron, Enemy at the Gates, and even Letters from Iwo Jima, playing a game sinking ships in the end is just a reflection of my interest in the period.

I have no problem with it. I would jump on a game like ARMA right now and blow up US soldiers to complete my objective.

I play the Silent Hunter Series.. and I PREFER the German side.

Am I a traitor? No. Would I in real life attack the US. No don't be silly.

Its a simulation. Your seeing things from the otherside of the fence so to speak. But I have no qualms with pulling the trigger and blowing up Zeros and Ones.. its a program after all.

You have to becareful with where your taking this.. people can distinguish right and wrong, and video games don't create violent people.

Its history, it happened. I wouldn't stop watching a movie because some US Soldiers got killed. or stop reading a book because something horrible happened to my country. Its entertainment, and I enjoy it. I'm not a monster because of that fact.

+1
I am Russian and I play on the German side, attacking the PQ17. It is known that the convoys PQ deliver the goods in the USSR. This does not mean that in reality I am with the same determination to fight against his going. It's game.

... wait for it..

Really?

If it bothers you that much sink English ships only then.If not.. then.. play as the Germans in a Type II In 1942 and only go into the Baltic. Think of yourself as a training boat..

Incidentally, the Baltic campaign for SH3 and SH4 are in demand.
